Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Grief and Love in the Animal Kingdom.  Cool program!  Over the years, I (and my wife) have rehabbed a number of baby squirrels, baby hares, young Magpies, and a Cedar Wax Wing – most recently this year saving two abandoned baby squirrels found on Easter Monday!  We rehab and release, and this year in particular, our two new “children” keep coming back to say Hello, and I’m sure they’re also saying Thank you!  Loved the program, especially how it shows our responsibility to be caring gatekeepers of our planet.

(Do I need to add that we had a Cairn Terrier who would greet us with a verbal “Helloo” – really!!)
-- John Wojcicki, Rotary Club of Edmonton, District 5370

Charlie Brown put a smile on my face with the Inspirational Moment.  Thanks!  Rotary Moment, Voices for Peace – a nice, reassuring glimpse into a positive future.
-- Andy Adams, Rotary Club of Campbell River, District 5020

The first few seconds of the TED talk made a lot of sense:  We are all trapped inside our head.  We tell ourselves stories.  We edit.  We delete.  Was a truth that I will need to remember when I assess a situation in my head.  This also applies to the Rotary minute:  When you feel like quitting, remember why you started.  Great lessons indeed!
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Submission from E-Club Member, Jeff
Rotary Exchange

Our E-club member, Jeff MacFarlane, manages the Rotary Exchange students for District 5360.  He has sent this report below.

Most of the inbound students in D5360 arrived on August 20.

In the picture above, from the left to the right, are:

Thibault – Belgium – High River
Senja – Finland - Stettler
Milou – Netherlands - Lacombe
Anna – Germany – Lethbridge East (though you cannot really see her)
Paola – Italy - Airdire
Linnea – Sweden- Innisfial
Carlotta – Spain – Calgary South
Tomas – Czech Republic- Cochrane (for David)
Bruno – Brazil - Okotoks
Val – Chile – Calgary Heritage Park
Balint – Hungary – Calgary North
Margot – Belgium – Calgary Fish Creek

We had a one-day orientation for the students. We talked about the rules, culture shock, sexual abuse and harassment, and what they can expect while they are here. We also played a game show to help them learn a little bit about Canada. The winning team all got Tim Hortons’ gift cards.

I have been part of the District committee for 8 years now. In the good old days, we used to have 30+ inbound students each year. It looks like we currently have 9 students working on applications for next year.

Latest Foundation Winner, Graham Drake

A Rotary Welcome message from our Foundation winner – Graham Drake below.

Early on any Friday morning and long before the park opens to the public, you will find a procession of cars heading into Heritage Park, home for the last 20 years of the Rotary Club of Calgary, Heritage Park.

While the official meeting starts at 7:00 a.m., most  members and guests show up as early as 6:30 for coffee and fellowship. Like most clubs, we focus on the 5 avenues of service, but a real driver for many of the 60 members is the fellowship and friendship that comes with serving together.

To that end, there is a focus on “sweat equity” projects that get Rotarians involved:

* regular monthly shifts at the food bank
* serving supper at Ronald Macdonald House, or
* work projects at homes for disadvantaged men and women

There is never a shortage of club members volunteering.

So, if you are an early riser and want to share in the fellowship of RCCHP, make sure you come before the bell rings at 7:00 a.m. on any Friday. If you are not a morning person, you can follow us on Instagram or Facebook.

We send thanks and Rotary cheers from our E-Club to yours, Rotarian Graham!

ISLAMABAD: With poliovirus viciously proliferating across various parts of Pakistan -- the world’s poorest performing country with 53 polio cases so far in 2019 -- Prime Minister Imran Khan Wednesday called for an “unprecedented public awareness and immunisation campaign” as the government decided to take help from the Pakistan Army for achieving targets of the immunisation campaign.

Speaking as chair of a high-level meeting convened at the PM Office to review Pakistan’s polio emergency, the prime minister expressed serious reservations over the recent spike in cases, and terming polio eradication as a priority intervention area, urged the programme’s leadership at the federal and provincial levels to embark on unprecedented awareness and immunisation campaigns to save children from the crippling disease. With rising number of cases, Pakistan is now being perceived, not only as a threat to its own children, but also as a country that stands to imperil global efforts for polio eradication.
