Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Very interesting listening to Angelica Dass and her observations on people's skin colour.  It is difficult to comprehend how tough life can be just because your skin is a different colour.
--David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One

Peter’s greeter message for the first of April was funny.  I love the Rhythm of the Dance.  Reminds me of a bit of Mexican Folkloric dance.
--Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One

Library Books and Overdue Fines.  It is interesting to learn that there is in today’s society a 30-million word gap in children by the age of three – this all due to literacy within our today’s society.  It is so important that we read to close that gap.

The discussion revolved around the fact that there are obstacles that are keeping people away from using libraries.  It is the fear of having overdue books and the fines that go with it.  People look at this as another credit card that they may not be able to afford.

Incentives and programs are being put in place to draw people back to using libraries and one is eliminating fines completely.  Fines are not a stable source of revenue for libraries and a small percentage of revenue.
-- Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, District 5370

Late fines for libraries.  I wonder if there is not, perhaps, a compromise to the problem of late fines vs. engagement of lower-income readers.

If there are fines, the speaker says they are deterred from belonging to a library, and then they read less.  If there are no fines, then there is likely little or no control of the library's resources, and these readers, most of whom are likely still in their formative years, are not learning to be responsible and play by rules.

A happy medium may be to extend lending times and provide some form of reminder when the lending period is almost up - after all, even the lowest of income families have smartphones, which can be pinged with a reminder message.  Libraries without control of their valuable resources will negatively affect a whole spectrum of readers.
-- Delwen Stander, E-Club of Canada One

Librarian’s Case against Overdue Book Fines.  The title of the program captured my attention – made me think if I had any overdue fines from my university days some 40+ years ago.  (I don’t!)

I spend a lot of time reading to and with my grandchildren and being read to.  And my fortunate position, and this program, served to remind me of the value of accessibility to reading material, especially for young children.

That in turn, reminded me of my Rotary Club’s support COW – Classroom on Wheels – and of our involvement with Success By Six and our current multi-club literacy work in Belize.  It was great to be reminded of the great resources we have available in the form of our libraries – and how accessing those resources needs to be done while making sure users apply our Four-Way Test!
-- John Wojcicki, RC of Edmonton, D5370

News from our E-club members
...submitted by Rotarian Doug Dyer

On May 16, I visited the Papamoa Rotary Club, New Zealand. It was their regular weekly meeting with about 16 members. Papamoa is a small beach town on North Island, and the Rotary club has been going strong for 10 years. The members, they were very warm and friendly, made me comfortable in Rotary style.

I had the great pleasure of visiting with Dawson, their Rotary exchange student who is from Cranbrook, British Columbia. What a mature and pleasant young woman! It is always so nice to meet people from home, and we had good laughs.

Dawson was very pleased with the Exchange program and felt that she had really matured since arriving almost one year ago. One highlight for her was meeting up with 30-plus other exchange students and spending time together exploring South Island. I can only imagine how cool an experience that would be.  She was also very interested in the e-club concept and will visit our meeting.

Another enjoyable terra club make-up for me.

Council elevates Rotaract
The 2019 Council on Legislation has completed its work.

Among its most important actions, the Council elevated the status of Rotaract clubs, allowing them to join Rotary International the way that Rotary clubs do. The change is intended to increase the support that Rotaract clubs receive from RI and to enhance their ability to serve.

The Council is made up of representatives from each Rotary district, and meets every three years in Chicago, Illinois, USA, to review the rules that govern the organization.

New members' corner

ABCs of Rotary - Nicknames
Cliff Dochterman, RI President 1992-93
From the earliest days of Rotary, members have referred to each other on a first-name basis. Since personal acquaintanceship and friendship are cornerstones of Rotary, it was natural that many clubs adopted the practice of setting aside formal titles in conversations among members.

Individuals who normally would be addressed as Doctor, Professor, Mister, the Honorable or Sir are regularly called Joe, Bill, Charley, or Jerry by other Rotarians. The characteristic Rotary club name badge fosters the first-name custom.

In a few areas, such as Europe, club members use a more formal style in addressing fellow members.

In other parts of the world, mainly in Asian countries, the practice is to assign each new Rotarian a humorous nickname which relates to some personal characteristic or which is descriptive of the member's business or profession.

A member nicknamed "Oxygen" is the manufacturer of chemical gas products. "Trees" is the nickname for the Rotarian in the lumber business, "Building" is the contractor, "Paper" is the stationery or office supply retailer. Other members might carry nicknames like "Muscles," "Foghorn" or "Smiles" as commentaries on their physical features.

The nicknames are frequently a source of good-natured fun and fellowship. But whether a Rotarian is addressed by a given first name or a nickname, the spirit of personal friendship is the initial step which opens doors to all other opportunities for service.

Students Improving Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene
With 750 million people lacking access to clean water and 2.5 billion without improved sanitation facilities, the global community must prioritize water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Students can play a fundamental role in these efforts such as the project in Malawi where an alternative was built that composts human waste and incorporates a hygiene station.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, D5370

The range of offerings of speakers and topics was excellent.  Loved hearing from a past exchange student who is now an active Rotarian.  Really enjoyed the diversity of the program offerings.  The session on autism was particularly meaningful for me.

A very interesting meeting:  (1) Maternal and Newborn Health Program (2) Canadiana re Sudbury
-- Fritz Steigmeier, Rotary Club of Stratford, D6330

Great story from Vicki about encountering another Rotarian on her travels in Guatemala.
-- David Werrett, Rotary E-Club of Canada One

Great speaker and story selection about Skin Colour.  Also, I enjoyed the music!

The Secretariat

Many Rotarians consider the Secretariat simply another name for the RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, U.S.A. Actually, it is much more. While it does include the World Headquarters, the Secretariat encompasses nearly 500 individuals working to make Rotary International run smoothly and effectively.

The term describes the entire operations of the general secretary and his staff. The Secretariat also includes eight Rotary Service Centres (formerly called Branch Offices) around the world, all of the staff serving in those centres, as well as all staff assigned to The Rotary Foundation. Its sole purpose is to serve the clubs, districts and administrative officers of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. RI World Headquarters, in a building called One Rotary Centre in Evanston, is the headquarters of the Secretariat. (www.rghf.org)

Once upon a time, when rotary was in its infancy, and you could count the number of clubs on both your hands and feet and have toes leftover, the Secretariat of Rotary was the Secretary of Rotary, Chesley R. (Ches) Perry.  Today, the Secretariat is the nomenclature given to the staff, the offices, and the services that run the infrastructure of Rotary International.

John Hewko
Originally based in Chicago, the birthplace of Rotary, it is now headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, and supported by field offices around the world.  As noted, staff function began with one Rotarian, Ches Perry, in 1910.  His story is part of Rotary Global History and can be found along with other past general secretaries.  He was joined two years later by Rufus Chapin, who would be the treasure of Rotary until 1942, when he and Perry retired.

Since then, many staff members have come and gone.  Some, like Charlotte Lane and Thelma Decker, started as secretaries or typists and rose to department heads.  All were valuable employees who have served Rotary over the years.  (https://www.rghfhome.org/first100/secretariat/history.htm#.XKnxcVVKjIU)

Rotary's current Secretarial General is John Hewko.  Mr. Hewko supervises a staff of almost 800; oversees all services provided to Rotary’s 1.2 million members in 34,000 clubs worldwide and the operations of the Rotary Foundation, including fundraising and grant making; manages revenues of $450 million and assets of $1 billion. Rotary minute

For more than 110 years, Rotary members have been addressing challenges around the world.

Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members.

Our ongoing commitment

Rotary members have not only been present for major events in history — we’ve also been a part of them. Three key traits have remained strong throughout our history:

We’re truly international. Only 16 years after being founded, Rotary had clubs on six continents. Today, members in nearly every country work to solve some of our world’s most challenging problems.

We persevere in tough times. During World War II, Rotary clubs in Austria, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain were forced to disband. Despite the risks, many continued to meet informally, and after the war, Rotary members came together to rebuild their clubs and their countries.

We’re committed to service, and we’re not afraid to dream big and set bold goals. We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines. Today, polio remains endemic in only three countries — down from 125 in 1988.

Latif Nasser - You have no idea where camels really come from!

Camels are so well adapted to the desert that it's hard to imagine them living anywhere else. But what if we have them pegged all wrong? What if those big humps, feet, and eyes were evolved for a different climate and a different time?

In this talk, join Radiolab's Latif Nasser as he tells the surprising story of how a very tiny, very strange fossil upended the way he sees camels, and the world.
