Inspirational moment

As we come to the end of March, we must be reminded of the powerful impact that Rotary International has on communities around the world.

Water and Sanitation.  One of Rotary's core areas of focus is water and sanitation, and this is especially important during the month of March. World Water Day on March 22 has passed, but mark it on your calendars for all future years.

Through initiatives like the Rotary Water and Sanitation Program, Rotary members have worked tirelessly to improve access to clean water and sanitation in communities where it is sorely lacking. They have installed wells, built latrines, and educated communities on the importance of proper hygiene practices.

These efforts have had a tremendous impact, reducing the incidence of waterborne illnesses and improving the overall health and well-being of people in some of the most vulnerable communities in the world.

Rotary's commitment to water and sanitation is a reminder of the power of collective action to effect change. By coming together, we can make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most.

As we move forward into the month of April, let us remember the important work that Rotary is doing to improve access to clean water and sanitation, and let us be inspired to join in this effort, both as individuals and as members of our own communities. Together, we can make a real difference in the world.

Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and a bit of history

Yarmouth, NS, incorporated as a town in 1890, population 6761 (2011c), 7162 (2006c).

The Town of Yarmouth is located at the entrance to Yarmouth Harbour at the western tip of Nova Scotia and referred to as Eastern Canada's Gateway.

Called Kespoowuit ("land's end") by the MI'Kmaq, and Port Fourchu by Samuel de Champlain, it was settled first by Acadians, later by settlers from New England (1761). During the American Revolution settlers began to arrive from Massachusetts, the beginning of Loyalist immigration to Nova Scotia.

As well as being the commercial and industrial centre of southwestern Nova Scotia, Yarmouth is also its transportation centre, with ferry service to Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine.

Our President-elect, Neil, resides in Yarmouth.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

February 15. Reading aloud to my children was one of my favourite activities.
-- Kimberley Dominguez, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

February 16. Great content.
-- Angel Francisco Blanco Garcia, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

February 16. Very interesting food for thought segment - “Whose Land are you on?” I live on the unseeded lands of the Mi'kmaq nation. Reference the Treaty of Peace and Friendship 1760 between the Crown and the First Nation peoples of Eastern Canada.
February 21. Where is home? Very interesting speaker! I have an expression – “Who knit yah?” We live in a global world. Maybe I should ask “Are you home?”
-- Neil Rogers, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

February 13. The TED talk by Doug Lansky on How to fix travel is an interesting perspective on travel. But when I hear airlines announcing all the new planes they have on order, I don't think his ideas are going to make much difference to the masses.
-- David Werrett, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Gordon McInally. What a wonderful Slogan for Rotary "Create Hope in the World.” I believe this is truly what Rotary has done and can continue to do so well as a team. Thank you for giving me this opportunity for years.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport (Honorary member)

Environment

The Ring of Fire is a string of volcanoes and sites of seismic activity, or earthquakes, around the edges of the Pacific Ocean. Roughly 90 percent of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, and the ring is dotted with 75 percent of all active volcanoes on Earth.

The Ring of Fire isn’t quite a circular ring. It is shaped more like a 40,000-kilometer (25,000-mile) horseshoe. A string of 452 volcanoes stretches from the southern tip of South America, up along the coast of North America, across the Bering Strait, down through Japan, and into New Zealand. Several active and dormant volcanoes in Antarctica, however, “close” the ring.

New members' corner

Rotary International is a global service organization that aims to improve the lives of people through community service, volunteerism, and promoting ethical standards. Each month, Rotary focuses on a specific area of humanitarian service to create awareness and encourage members to take action. In April, Rotary's focus is on Maternal and Child Health.

Maternal and child health is a vital aspect of public health, as it impacts the well-being of families, communities, and nations. Unfortunately, millions of women and children die each year due to preventable causes such as inadequate healthcare, malnutrition, and poverty. The goal of Rotary's Maternal and Child Health month is to promote access to quality healthcare, nutrition, and education to reduce maternal and child mortality rates globally.

Rotary clubs around the world carry out various projects to improve maternal and child health. For example, some clubs support vaccination campaigns, provide maternal and newborn healthcare services, and promote family planning education. Others provide training and equipment to healthcare professionals, improve sanitation and hygiene in communities, and provide access to clean water sources.

Rotary also partners with various organizations and governments to provide comprehensive solutions to maternal and child health issues. For instance, Rotary partners with UNICEF and the World Health Organization to promote maternal and child healthcare services, including vaccination, prenatal care, and safe childbirth.

In conclusion, Rotary's April focus on Maternal and Child Health is an essential initiative that raises awareness and encourages action on the need for quality healthcare, nutrition, and education for mothers and children. By collaborating with various organizations, Rotary members can make a significant impact in improving maternal and child health, saving lives, and strengthening communities around the world.

Click here to read about the Rotary Action Group for Family Health & AIDS Prevention (RFHA).

Rotary Action Group for Family Health & AIDS Prevention (RFHA) is a Rotary International-recognized action group that mobilizes and guides Rotary members to take on sustainable projects to promote healthy families and communities around the globe.

RFHA creates and implements large-scale community development and humanitarian service programs for disease prevention, screenings, treatment, and education to improve the lives of children and families who lack access to preventive healthcare and education.

Billy Bishop was a Canadian World War I flying ace, widely regarded as one of the greatest pilots in Canadian history. Born in Owen Sound, Ontario in 1894, Bishop developed a love for flying at a young age, and by 1915 he had enrolled in the Royal Military College of Canada.

When World War I broke out, Bishop was sent to England and trained as a pilot. He soon joined the Royal Flying Corps and began flying combat missions over France. Bishop quickly proved himself to be an exceptional pilot, with a natural talent for flying and a fearless attitude toward danger.

Over the course of the war, Bishop became known for his daring exploits, including several solo missions behind enemy lines and a number of dogfights against some of the most skilled German pilots of the day. He was credited with 72 aerial victories, making him one of the most successful pilots of the war.

After the war, Bishop returned to Canada and continued to fly, setting a number of records for speed and distance. He also worked as an aviation consultant, helping to establish the Canadian Air Force and promoting aviation as a career for young Canadians.

Despite his many achievements, Bishop's life was not without controversy. Some historians have disputed the accuracy of his wartime record, and there have been questions about whether he was truly as skilled a pilot as he claimed to be. Nevertheless, Bishop remains an important figure in Canadian history and a symbol of courage and daring for pilots around the world.

There is an airport named after Billy Bishop.

The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, also known as the Toronto Island Airport, is located on the Toronto Islands in Lake Ontario and serves the downtown area of Toronto, Canada. The airport was named after Bishop in 2009, to commemorate his contributions to Canadian aviation and his status as a national hero. The airport is known for its unique location and short runways, which require pilots to have specialized training and experience in order to operate safely.

Today, the airport serves as an important hub for regional and business travel in the Toronto area.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

January 29. Nature always has surprises. How did a moth learn how to mimic a hummingbird, fly like it, and feed on nectar the same way, and then fly in a similar way so that it fools predators?
February 4. Daniel Amen's TED talk about Changing your brain and changing your life was a real attention-getter. The most concerning thing must be the foods that children are consuming and being provided at schools. They are getting on the road to obesity at such at an early age and, according to Dr. Amen, damaging their brain.
February 11. I am having difficulty comprehending that there are 20,000 species of bees in the world! And who managed to count them all!
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 31. The January 31 meeting was so inspiring right from Bobbie's story to They Fly (song) to the speaker advocating for a Brain Healthy World. Something for all of us to strive for! Well Done!
February 7. We need more young people like Josh opening doors and building relationships. The 30 Bee Facts video helped build my understanding of these amazing creatures. Then Ted Speaker Stacy Kauk had me mesmerized. Another first-class meeting!
February 13. How to Fix Travel was an eye-opening talk.
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

February 3. Loved the story about the dog!! Really enjoyed the TED talk on CCS. Finally a rational, well-thought-out path forward.
-- Kimberley Dominguez, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 30. (1) Bobby the Wonder Dog was a pretty amazing, unbelievable story – a wonder indeed! (2) 10 million starlings in Rome was great to watch the formations, but what a mess to clean the cars to see to get to work as well as the roads! (3) Cute puns. (4) Good reminders on brain health.
February 6. Enjoyed watching the inspirational moment with Josh, and watching his story of going from being bullied and shy, to having courage to offer kindness starting with opening doors, then public speaking and helping other youth. The bee facts were interesting, the Queen acapella was pretty impressive, and the speaker from Spotify re: climate/carbon was interesting.
-- Brenda Race, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Lindsey Schneider. Overview of a piece of history regarding the Indigenous People. More important to emphasize how the First Nations treat the land as a relative. Good contribution towards reconciliation.
-- Peter Koeleman, Rotary Club of Campbell River, District 5020
