Canadiana
Called “the
Canadian Kipling,” Robert Service is remembered today for poems such as “The Shooting
of Dan McGrew” (1907) and that perennial elementary school public-speaking
favourite, “The Cremation of Sam McGee” (1907).
This prolific and
towering literary figure puts to shame those of us who toil away grinding out
books of trivia. Aside from a career
that encompassed journalism, editing, playwriting, directing theatre, literary
criticism and teaching, he is probably most widely remembered for his novel
trilogies: The Salterton Trilogy
(1951-58) The Deptford Trilogy (1970-75), and The Cornish Trilogy (1981-88).
Pierre Berton (1920-2004)
The writer who
made the world realize that Canadian history could be exciting, Berton
published countless volumes of lively, meticulously researched “popular
history.” While many of his works are
famous in Canada, his two-volume history of the War of 1812 – The Invasion of
Canada (1980) and Flames Across the Border (1981) – in particular shows a
non-fiction writer at the height of his powers.
Margaret Atwood (b. 1939)
Arguably Canada’s
best-known writer, Atwood is a novelist, essayist and poet, notable for an
incredibly diverse body of work that trades in themes of feminism, Canadian
identity, sexual identity, and just being human.

June 17. A very moving talk by Carl Pillitteri about
being in the Fukushima Power Plant when the earthquake hit followed by the
tsunami.

The Fog of
Disbelief. The fog of disbelief reminds
me of my earthquake experiences in El Salvador in 2000 and 2001. We hear the tremendous emotion this speaker
is challenged with as he tries to share his story PTSD. Events that shake our worlds – perhaps even
those that the massive changes the Covid-19 virus is causing – upset us
to our cores. But through sharing your
experiences with others, as this speaker tries to do, healing can be found. Be
well and share what you are able to do with your time.

New members' corner
The polio
eradication infrastructure used for detecting the poliovirus and delivering
vaccinations is enabling a strong response to COVID-19, especially in
polio-endemic countries.
Polio staff in
those countries who track the spread of the poliovirus are supporting
surveillance for COVID-19 through contact tracing, improving lab testing,
providing technical support, and training additional surveillance officers.

Rotary minute
Food for thought
The recent
coronavirus pandemic is only exacerbating the problems currently facing
herders, also known as pastoralists, in Kenya. They’ve seen their livestock
devastated and crops destroyed after the worst locust invasions in 70 years and
villagers are bracing themselves for another swarm, 400 times larger if left
unchecked.
With less
vegetation for grazing, herders can sometimes infringe on neighbours’ land,
causing violent conflict. We follow Josephine Ekiru, a peace-builder, who is
trying to help as economic insecurity caused by the pandemic fuels attacks.

Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.
