Oliver, the 7-year-old police officer – too cute! Brigitta Nagi was fantastic!

Humour

When I was a kid my parents would always say “excuse my French” just after a swear word. I’ll never forget that first day at school when the teacher asked if anyone knew any French.

What’s the difference between a literalist and a kleptomaniac? One takes things literally, the other takes things literally.

The Rotary District Governor performs a very significant function in the world of Rotary. He is the single officer of Rotary International in his geographic area, called a Rotary District which usually includes about 45 Rotary clubs.

The 529 District Governors who have been extensively trained at the worldwide International Assembly provide the quality control for the 31,500 Rotary clubs of the world. They are responsible for maintaining high-performance within the clubs of their district.

The District Governor who must make an official visit to each club in his district is never regarded as an “inspector general.” Rather he visits as a helpful and friendly adviser to the club officers as a useful counsellor to further the “Object of Rotary” among the clubs of his district and as a catalyst to help strengthen the programs of Rotary.

The District Governor is a very experienced Rotarian who generously devotes a year of his life to the volunteer task of leadership. The Governor has a wealth of knowledge about current Rotary programs, purposes, policies and goals. He is a person of recognized high standing in his profession, community, and Rotary club. He must supervise the organization of new clubs and strengthen existing ones.

He performs a host of specific duties to assure that the quality of Rotary does not falter in his district. He is responsible to promote and implement all programs and activities of the Rotary International President, and the R.I. Board of Directors. The Governor plans and directs a district conference and other special events.

Each district Governor performs a very important role in the worldwide operations of Rotary. The District Governor is truly a prime example of Service above Self, performing a labour of love.

Niagara Falls

Follow-up from a recent Thursday-morning discussion about Niagara Falls.

July 3, 1984. The first Canadian to conquer the Falls was Karel Soucek. Karel survived the plunge; but later that year, Karel was killed while recreating the drop from a platform inside the Houston Astrodome.

October 5, 1985. A Canadian mechanic, John “Super Dave” Munday, made a successful trip in his barrel. Dave could not get enough! He made a second successful trip on September 26, 1993.

September 28, 1989. Niagara Falls Ontario residents, Peter De Bernardi and Jeffery James Petkovich accomplished the first duo descent of the Falls.
June 18, 1995
. Steve Trotter returns to the Falls again to make his second attempt, this time with a partner, Lori Martin, a caterer from Georgia. They were the first make and female to make the big drop together.

And a rather humorous anecdote:

October 22, 2003. Kirk Jones from Canton, Michigan, becomes the first stunter in the history of Niagara Falls to survive the plunge wearing only the clothes on his back. Kirk’s idea had been in the works for a number of years. While here on a visit with a friend, Kirk made the decision.

They purchased a used video camera to record this historical event and went to the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of the river. Kirk entered the water about one hundred yards upstream and began swimming out into the swift current. Eight seconds later, Kirk made the 175-foot drop and swam to shore while passing up a free ride with the Maid of the Mist tour boat.

Kirk was treated for minor bumps and bruises at a local hospital and released only after promising to return for court. For his stunt, Kirk was fined a total of $2,300 and banned from entering Canada for life.

Unfortunately, Kirk and his friend had been imbibing in alcohol before the stunt, Kirk’s friend couldn’t figure out how to work the camcorder, and the entire stunt went unrecorded!

The Tyranny of Merit. I really enjoyed the inspirational moment. My takeaway is to find ways to do my part as we work towards creating equality in society.
Craig Berke, not yet a Rotarian (inducted November 17)

Climate Change activist. I am going to show this video to our new Rotary Interact Club who have joined with a group in Guatemala called (translated) Inheritors of the Environment. This group will teach our club members how to go into our community to teach others how to protect and repair our environment.

November is Foundation Month
Why should you support the Rotary Foundation?

When every Rotarian donates to our Rotary Foundation every year, it makes Doing Good in the World possible.

Our Foundation’s Annual Fund provides the funding for local and international grant projects that improve lives around the world. Your contributions help us promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water and sanitation, save mothers and children, support education, grow local economies, and respond to disasters.

Thanks to Rotarians who give every year, we accomplished a lot in 2019-20:

* Rotarians gave $123.6 million to the Annual Fund.
* The Foundation awarded 1,359 global grants.

These life-changing, sustainable projects are possible because of donors like you, who take action and make a personal contribution to the Annual Fund. When every Rotarian gives every year, no challenge is too great for us to make a difference.

It’s not easy finding a job…

At my first job, I was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned. I just couldn’t concentrate.

Then, I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn’t hack it, so they gave me the axe.

After that, I tried being a tailor, but I wasn’t suited for it, mainly because it was a sew-sew job.

Next, I tried working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because I got tired of the same old grind.

Then, I tried being a chef – I figured it would add spice to my life, but I just didn’t have the thyme.

My best job was as a musician, but I eventually found I wasn’t noteworthy.

I studied for a long time to become a doctor, but I didn’t have any patience.

Next up was a job in a shoe factory. I tried hard, but I just didn’t fit in.

After that, I became a fisherman, but I discovered I couldn’t live on my net income.

Next, I managed to get a job at a pool maintenance company, but the work was too draining.

So, after that, I got a job at a workout center, but they said I wasn’t fit for the job.

After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a historian, but I realized there was no future in it.

My last job was when I tried working in a muffler factory, but that was too exhausting.

So, I tried retirement! I found I’m PERFECT for the job.
