Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Water and Sanitation.  We take the availability of clean water and sanitation as something so natural yet so many millions in this world do not enjoy such a luxury. I have seen what some people have to drink when I went to an Island in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India on a Rotary water and sanitation project and their water supply was a muddy pond.
--Rotarian David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One

Very humorous presentation on better toilets and water.
--Rotarian Delwen Stander, E-Club of Canada One

Do we realize how fortunate we are - water and sanitation is not always available.  I like the comment from the woman who builds toilets that she can now afford to pay school fees.  Again, we are fortunate in that our children are educated!
--Rotarian Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One

How we're harnessing nature's hidden superpowers, by Oded Shoseyov.
First time I've heard about this approach of producing new products from the DNA of flora and fauna.

I like the format very much; ended up spending an hour on the site.
--Jim Maxwell, RC of West Ottawa, District 7040

For the past two years, I have had the privilege of being a chaperone and working with many young leaders as they attend the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg as part of our district’s program to introduce young people to human rights.

As Youth Service Chair, I find working with these young leaders to be very inspiring. They have a strong investment in social justice, in creating positive change, and are willing to tackle tough issues without compromise.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
Angelica Dass – Beauty of Human Skin in Every Colour.  First of all, I like the new site format.  Secondly, I like the Jukebox – so much that I had to hit Pause, go run and grab my guitar and sing/play along!!  Fortunately, no one was home at the time!

The program was the real highlight.  What an awesome message – and what great occasion to apply our Four-Way Test!  As much as we thought we progressed, we can see that we still have a way to go.  And what a great objective for Rotarians.
-- John Wojcicki – Rotary Club of Edmonton, District 5370

Angelica Dass – The Beauty of Human Skin in Every Colour.  This is one of those meetings that makes you laugh and makes you cry.  From Billy Crystal’s fabulous tribute to Mohammed Ali to the powerful message from Angelica Dass, I cherished every minute!
-- Robert Boyden, Rotary Club of Canmore, District 5360

Students Improving Water.  Despite having lived all 66 years of my life in Canada, I realized how little I really know about our vast country and its history.  The Canadiana article on Sudbury was fascinating.  I look forward to the next opportunity to learn more about our great country.
-- Robert Boyden, Rotary Club of Canmore, District 5360

On a few recent meetings:
Canadiana – Excellent chronology of “Black History in Canada.”  IGen – the smart-phone generation.  Awesome!  So true!  Rotary Jukebox:  Rhythms of the Dance – my toes are still tapping!

Inspirational Moment – Great work by the midwives of Haiti.  Great to see Larry Reynolds from my club in the “comments from our guests and members.”

A little humour.  Billy Crystal 1979 tribute to Ali.  What a classic!  Jukebox:  Stand By Me performance.  What a treat!
-- Andy Adams, Rotary Club of Campbell River, District 5030

The Library Fines talk was exceptional.  Probably one of the reasons that I don’t hit the library too often, and we have an excellent one here.
-- Jim Kenyon, Rotary E-Club of Canada One

Council elevates Rotaract
The 2019 Council on Legislation has completed its work.

Among its most important actions, the Council elevated the status of Rotaract clubs, allowing them to join Rotary International the way that Rotary clubs do. The change is intended to increase the support that Rotaract clubs receive from RI and to enhance their ability to serve.

The Council is made up of representatives from each Rotary district, and meets every three years in Chicago, Illinois, USA, to review the rules that govern the organization.

News from our Rotary family
A message from Rotarian Vicki

I just finished listening to an awesome TedTalk on our club's Weekly Meeting, entitled "Dawn Wacek: A librarian's case against overdue book fines". To learn statistics about how people living in poverty are underachievers because they don't have access to books resonated strongly with me.

From the time my children were 6 months old, we as parents read to them every single night even up into their teen years. When they were able to read on their own, we had family reading times, where we each had our own book. Other times we would read one book collectively, all listening to whichever reader was taking their turn.

I live in a poor community, a small village in Guatemala, where there is no public library.  So even if someone has the means to pay fines for overdue library books, it is irrelevant because there are no books.

One of my dreams as director of Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans organization is to one day build a community library. We currently have a small library in our organization's facility that we use for our reading program for our sponsored students.

We are about to embark on a lending system which we have been advised against because, even in communities in Guatemala that do have libraries, they don't allow library visitors to take out books because they think people with destroy them, use them as firewood, or in some other way be irresponsible.

Dawn Wacek's talk was very empowering. She emphasized that every child, regardless of socio-economic circumstances, had the right to have access to books in order to improve learning.

I will take her suggestions to heart with our current students, and with our community when the day comes that we will have a library for our village. In May, I have a date with a volunteer with Librarians without Borders. I am excited to show her Dawn Wacek's TedTalk and I discuss the content of it with her.
