News from our E-Club members
...submitted by Rotarian Jean-Michel
On March 29, I had the pleasure to be a guest of Bill Skinner at the weekly meeting of his club, the Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park, District 5360.
Bill Skinner is one of the proponents of the Lake Atitlan project in Guatemala that our president-elect, Peter Denooy, is also encouraging the Rotary-E-Club of Canada One to support. This project is a multi-year project supported by a number of North-American and Canadian non-profit organizations with a goal of protecting Lake Atitlan from contamination.
Lake Atitlan is a large inland lake without a known outlet. It is therefore considered sensitive to degradation from a variety of sources - from tourism, agriculture, and human activity. The project being considered will concentrate on providing safe drinking water and reducing the amount of human waste reaching the lake which in turn, causes toxification through serious algae bloom.

At the meeting, I presented our club banner and received the Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park's banner from President Jim Coyle. The visit to the club was also timely as Bill Skinner’s motion asking the club to provide $5000 towards a Global Grant to support the Lake Atitlan project was passed.
It also gave me the opportunity to announce that the Rotary E-Club of Canada One was planning to become a partner on this project and was sending $2500 to fund the engineering assessment.
Visiting terra clubs provides an opportunity to promote our club, but I hope in the future to participate on local community projects.

HANWASH in Haiti - an update from WASRAG!
http://www.wasrag.org - Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group
NEWS
May 22, 2018 - Rotary and DINEPA Protocol Accord. Rotary District 7020 and DINEPA have entered into an historic agreement to work together to tackle Haiti's biggest challenge: clean water for all.
HANWASH stands for Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Health Strategy: a collaborative, national initiative by Rotary District 7020, The Rotary Foundation and DINEPA (The Haitian Government’s National Water and Sanitation Agency), partnering with other NGOs such as Haiti Outreach and Pure Water for the World, committed to providing thoughtfully managed and sustainable clean water and sanitation to all the citizens of Haiti, along with the associated health, community and economic benefits.
HANWASH is happy to announce significant progress on all fronts. The HANWASH Steering Committee continues to meet weekly and now a number of Subcommittees including the Projects and Technical Subcommittee and Measurement Evaluation and Learning Subcommittee are meeting regularly also.
HANWASH continues its regular dialogue with Haitian Government’s WASH Agency DINEPA and is working hand in hand with them on the four pilot projects they proposed in the Communes of Cavaillon, Ferrier, Trou du Nord and Croix des Bouquets.
The HANWASH team has the goal of creating access to safely managed water for everyone in Haiti. To accomplish this task requires establishing a framework of Accountability, Responsibility and Transparency that works to enrol partners and create technically sound, revenue positive, safely managed infrastructure.
Funding for the four pilots will be achieved through a combination of phased Global Grants from the Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Club of Les Cayes which will be the local partner for the first two grants for the Cavaillon Commune.

Dr. Jean M. Twenge tackles society’s smart-phone addiction through a generational lens.
As our phones have become more saddled to our everyday lives, Twenge examines the negative externalities associated with this phenomenon and how we can combat that issue right now.
A Professor of Psychology at San Diego State University, Twenge is the author of more than 140 scientific publications and six books, including iGen: Why Today’s Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy–and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood.
