Questions about Canada - trivia

1.  Name the three territories of Canada
2.  When was Nunavut named?
3.  Name the 10 provinces of Canada
4.  Why did Nunavut become its own territory?
5.  What is the population of Nunavut?

**********************************

1.  Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut

2.  On April 1, 1999, Nunavut separated from the Northwest Territories to become the newest Canadian territory.  The creation of Nunavut was the outcome of the largest aboriginal land claims agreement between the Canadian government and the native Inuit people.

3.  British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland/Labrador, Prince Edward Island

4.  Nunavut was formed from part of the Northwest Territories in 1999.  When Canada first became a country, Native people were not asked what they thought about Confederation.  In fact, the Government of Canada took control of the land, resulting in hanges to the Inuit way of life.  The Inuit wanted control of their land.

5.  The total current population of Nunavut (as of 2011) is estimated to be around 33,330 people, the vast majority (84%) of whom are Inuit.  Of the approximately 28,000 Inuit living in Nunavut, more than half of them reside in the eastern Qikiqtaaluk region of the territory, and, remarkably, they are mostly young people.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Excellent TED talk on sanitation!  I’ve been in villages that use these toilette buildings.  Near the dam we built in 2017, two Rotarians on our team were dentists and horrified that all the women helping either had very rotten sandals or were barefoot.

They sneaked off somehow and emptied a shop an hour away of all their shoes.  They came back and presented the whole carload of shoes to the ladies.  The next morning, we were invited over to their village and they had two of these toilette buildings.

We even got to pet the water buffalo…
--Jim Kenyon, Rotary E-Club of Canada One

Better Toilets, Better Life
The effect that one man can have, with his invention of sand filtration, on thousands of communities so they have clean and drinkable water!
Ivan Docker, Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona, District 5370

Joe Madiath, Better Toilets, Better Life
India suffers from open defecation and water-borne diseases  Water is in most areas in India not available 24/7 and is carried by hand in most cases.  Water towers are now being built to store and then provide water on tap in villages 24/7.

Leaching pits are also used to break down human waste with fruit trees planted net to them to suck up the nutrients and provide exceptional fruit. All of this has reduced the transmission of disease by 82 percent.
Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain

The Zimbabwe water sanitation project.
The topic of water quality is close to my heart.  The Kamel Cup Charity even ran a fundraising event several years ago to fund the drilling of several wells for a small community in Ethiopia.

Water is life.

JP Kamel, Rotary E-Club of Canada One

Food for thought

Immunization saves millions of lives every year.

Vaccination is one of the most successful and cost-effective health interventions. Yet outbreaks of diseases that vaccines could prevent continue to put children’s health at risk throughout the world.

Rotary knows firsthand that #VaccinesWork. We’ve contributed more than $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children from polio. Take action and help Rotary spread the word about the importance of vaccination during World Immunization Week, 24-30 April.
