Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Abeny Kucha. I very recently had a conversation with a man from Minnesota who was complaining that all these Muslim Somalians (maybe they were really Sudanese!) were a problem. When I asked him why they were a problem, he replied, "Well, they keep to themselves, and they cover their heads."

I asked again why that was a problem. He said, "Well, when any group is different, it causes problems." I asked him what was a problem. He said, "Well, I feel offended." Then I finally understood what the the problem was! I wonder if I could get him to watch this video.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Ali Al Abdullatif.  Very interesting program!  Sad that prejudice can strike in the most innocuous situation. Ali should know that he has more than 14 friends ready to help him – he has over One Million Rotarians who can do likewise!!
-- John Wojcicki, Rotary Club of Edmonton, District 5370

The Moth.   Good example of the significance of fellowship and support. Also watched "Dogoodary" -- another great example of "young" and "old" working together on projects.
I like the format as it is.
-- James Maxwell, Rotary Club of West Ottawa, District 7040

Abeny Kucha:  The First Cow.  Abeny gave an account of her life in Africa during the Sudan war and how she and her family were homeless for 8+ years. They wandered from refugee camp to camp and to and from different African countries. Finally, they arrived in the US where she could finally provide a home, food, and education for her children. Her daughter was able to graduate from law school.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Abeny Kucha.  I have just returned from a trip which included Africa, So Abeny's story was quite timely. It is interesting to hear firsthand the story of a refugee or immigrant.
-- Graham Drake, Rotary Club of Calgary Heritage Park, District 5360

New members' corner

Neil Van Dine, a member of the E-Club of WASH in District 9980 (New Zealand), spent 15 years on projects to bring wells and hand pumps to communities in Haiti, struggling to keep them operational. In 2004, he commissioned a survey that revealed half of the wells weren’t functioning. Previous efforts to provide maintenance weren’t holding up.

So Van Dine and his team reassessed and came up with a new plan: His Rotary club trained the community to develop a business plan that involved the whole community. The plan involves collecting a small amount of money from each household that is earmarked toward maintenance and repairs of the wells. Now, 90 percent of the wells they have built are operational.

By Stephanie Herzfeld
On 27 March 2020, the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Region recognizes six years of polio-free certification.

To be sure, this is an important benchmark as we progress toward a polio-free world, but as I look back on my first National Immunization Day trip to India, the country in the region once considered the most difficult to bring to zero cases, this date has now taken on a new personal significance.

Prior to the January NID trip—in which I accompanied members of the press—I felt I had a solid grasp on Rotary’s polio efforts and its leading role in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). As part of Rotary International’s public relations team, I’ve put together many, many reference documents highlighting key dates, strategies and figures that underscore our members’ commitment to the cause and prove that our collective efforts pay off.

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Ali Alabdullatif – The Kindness of Patriots.  I am very happy to see the weekly meeting reflect the family of Rotary and learning together. The awareness of Indigenous youth working with Water and Sanitation is excellent. The awareness of newcomers/international students and how some might interpret their actions in the context of world events is eye-opening, and how this student made the decision about where home was to be for him.
After  accompanying many newcomers, many of them students who bring with them their own ideas of what life should be like here, and observing how it is, indeed, different at times to this, is a challenge we all go through. WE can only be hospitable to all and lend a hand when the opportunity presents itself.
A great meeting and weekly bulletin!
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport

DoGoodery.  What a simple and fun concept!  A heart-warming presentation.

Humour

My sister is a veterinary student.

She said a little girl brought her hamster in because it had not moved for 3 days and was just sitting at the side of the cage and wouldn’t eat or drink or anything.

So she asked the little girl if anything had happened that may have caused this behavior.  The girl says, “Yes, he escaped for a bit but we found him under the fridge.”

So, they have a look at this hamster, put him on the table, and he’s walking around, eating and drinking – all fine!  So this is really weird.

Then, they notice there’s something in his cheek pouch.  So they look inside and find a fridge magnet.

Turns out the only thing wrong with this hamster is that it had a fridge magnet in his cheek pouch and had been stuck to his metal cage!

Food for thought

Until COVID-19, there had been nothing like the polio virus, which swept North America in four waves in the 20th century, leaving thousands of Canadians with permanent disabilities.
Eighty-three years after the worst wave hit Toronto, the polio epidemic of 1937 provides a cautionary tale about lack of preparedness, the rush to try untested remedies and the long-lasting health impacts of an epidemic.

It may foreshadow the kind of societal shifts that the current pandemic will bring. The unanticipated need for iron lungs, unproven treatments, and the first major government intervention in paying for health care were all features of the fight against polio.
