Inspirational moment

Man Gives $4 Million Dollar Apartment Complex To Let Homeless Women And Their Children Live For Free

Rick Steves is a multi-millionaire with the heart of gold. The travel guru famous for his popular travel series on PBS has made a fortune throughout his career with his best-selling European travel guides. But as they say, that money isn’t everything, which is why Steves is working on leaving an inspirational legacy.

He has given the YWCA a building complex that helps homeless women and children to stay for free. It’s a $4 million apartment complex that houses up to 24 struggling women and their mothers without worrying about the rent. Steves purchased the building back in 2015 intending to give it away.

Trinity Palace is focused on helping single mothers recovering from addictions. The help and support is provided by YWCA and Rotary Club to get the women back on their feet and to provide a caring environment that they deserve. The two-bedroom apartments have all the amenities for the single mothers to live with their kids.

Steves says that “the gap between rich and poor in our country continues to widen. And I believe needs — such as affordable housing — will only increase as budget cuts are implemented.” He is truly an angel in disguise and our country needs more multi-millionaires like him to help those in need.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Planting a bomb - very scary. Another case of someone's skin color being the basis for an accusation.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Ali Al Abdullatif.  Ali Al Abdullatif was born and raised in Saudi Arabia.  He talked of his story of how he was on a train one day where he simply replaced a screw that fell out on the seat and man accused him of planting a bomb. This accusation resulted in the train being stopped and everyone transferred to another train except for him and the accuser.

Ali was to be questioned further; but due to a breakdown of process, he was sent home and told he would be contacted later. Immediately after, he went to a friend’s party and those there could not believe that he was accused mainly for his ethnic background.  To this point, he had been questioning whether he belonged in the U.S.; but because of the people surrounding him that day, he realized this was his home.

Ali was not a traditional Saudi. He was an ideologist who ultimately defined himself as a bit of a nerd. That day, it took one man to cause him to doubt himself, and then it took 14 to reassure him that he was okay.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Humour

The pedestrian light on the corner beeps when it's safe to cross the street.

I was crossing with a co-worker of mine.  She asked if I knew what the beeper was for.

I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.

Appalled, she responded, "What on earth are blind people doing driving?!"

She is a government employee...

*******

When my wife and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a service, we were told the keys had been locked in it.

We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door. As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.

"Hey," I announced to the technician, "it's open!"

His reply, "I know. I already did that side."

Speaker Program

We're raising our girls to be perfect, and we're raising our boys to be brave, says Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code.

Saujani has taken up the charge to socialize young girls to take risks and learn to program -- two skills they need to move society forward. To truly innovate, we cannot leave behind half of our population, she says. "I need each of you to tell every young woman you know to be comfortable with imperfection."

Four-way Test

To close the meeting, Rotarian Keith Evans recites the Rotary Four-Way Test of the things that Rotarians think, say, or do.
