Our National Anthem

On January 31, 1966, Canada’s Prime Minister at the time, Lester B. Pearson, made an announcement in the House of Commons regarding the official status of the O Canada! anthem.

Pearson proposed that the government take steps to make O Canada! the official national anthem of Canada, while keeping ‘God Save the Queen’ as Canada’s royal national anthem. The federal government authorized a special committee which furthered Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson’s suggestion.

After many debates and discussions, the Canadian government acquired the copyrights of Weir’s English version of O Canada! and music composition for future amendments. Over a decade after Pearson’s 1966 announcement, The House of Commons and the Senate passed The National Anthem Act on 27 June 1980, receiving Royal assent for the change the same day.

What better day to make the announcement than Canada Day? On July 1, 1980, in a public ceremony featuring the descendants of Routhier and Weir, O Canada! was finally proclaimed as the official national anthem of Canada.

Further interesting background information on the history of our national anthem can be found here:

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Learn to Travel. Travel to Learn.  Robin Esrock had an opportunity to travel around the world in one year to 24 countries. This was all made possible by an accident settlement of 20k. His travel resulted in writing and reporting through media on his journeys. There he learnt many things about how to deal with fears, trust, acceptance and most importantly how people shape the world.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Wherever you are is where you are supposed to be?  Great message from this week's speaker!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Travel.  Travel can be fun by meeting people and enjoying their company. As Rotarians, we have the advantage of friends around the world.
-- Reynolds, Rotary Club of Campbell River Lunch, District 5020

Learn to Travel.  Travel to Learn.  I like how Robin provided thought-provoking questions to get more insight into how we are conducting our lives, including the potential of travel to open up & expand our knowledge & connectivity, including the experience of having a "major wake-up call."
-- Velma Noble, Rotary Club of Calgary, Heritage Park, District 5360

Comments regarding our recent Fellowship Assembly, October 15

Hello and Good evening Peter,

Jonathan here.  Sorry I have not been able to join for the October club assembly.  We have some internet issues due to the insurgency in Iraq, Turkey, and neighbouring countries.  Otherwise congratulations on all that you are doing.

Attached is my contribution towards the discussion.

Why I Joined Rotaract
By then we were going to do a medical camp in one the villages in my country.  Then the experience got me thinking that there are people out there who are giving back to the community.  So for me, it was sense of belonging to the community.  The theme of Service Above Self sounded very captivating for me.

So I joined the Rotaract club first to use my idle time serving other people.  It was from that, I was asked to charter a community club in my town. It was also to expand my knowledge of the world.

Now I have got the opportunity to meet people across the globe that I in my ordinary life would never have met. And because of that, my country being a developing country, there is a lot that needs to be done, especially in the health sector.

Why the E-club?
Learning about the E-club was a great opportunity to meet with people, because basically I missed fellowship and I have always wondered how this can be done.  The reasons remain the same but more of maintaining the touch and mostly meeting new people.

How can you attract and maintain members
Personally I think there has to be some sort of leverage that the member can get out of the club, because people join for different reasons. Get to know the reasons and try to fulfill them.  Sense of belonging is very important.  If one does not feel belonging to something, they will not commit or even be available for it. Think of it as a relationship, whether it is good or bad.

Then also encourage Rotaractors to join these meetings, but show them how to be committed to the club.

Thank you and Kind regards,

Twinamatsiko Alex Jonathan

Navi Radjou has spent years studying "jugaad," also known as frugal innovation. Pioneered by entrepreneurs in emerging markets who figured out how to get spectacular value from limited resources, the practice has now caught on globally.

Peppering his talk with a wealth of examples of human ingenuity at work, Radjou also shares three principles for how we can all do more with less.

Three interesting and unrelated bits of trivia

The first - Designated in 2013 as an Event of Provincial Significance

Nominated by Valerie Simims-Anderson

Four moose were introduced to the island of Newfoundland near the town of Howley in 1904.  Positive and negative, the (estimated) 150,000 descendants of these hungry herbivores have left an indelible mark on this province's identity, culture, and landscape.

Moose were originally introduced as part of a wider government initiative to develop the island's interior.  It was hoped that the animals would attract big game hunters - a new market for Newfoundland's new railways. The meat would also sustain workers needed in the burgeoning mining and forestry industries - a key to diversifying the country's fishing-based economy.

With few natural predators and finding Newfoundland the perfect habitat, moose thrived and the rest is history.

Today, moose are so numerous that they pose a hazard to drivers, and their voracious appetites are altering the native forest.  but the moose is nonetheless an important part of this province's identity.  Moose meat is a feature on the BBQs of community festivals and the menus of gourmet restaurants promoting local food, and the annual moose hunt is celebrated in story and song as an opportunity for people to reconnect with the land.
The second - The Apology Act

You won’t find people in any other country in the world who will say the word “sorry” to someone who is clearly in the wrong. This is a uniquely Canadian phenomenon. So unique, in fact, that the term carries legal weight in the province of Ontario.

The “Apology Act“, passed in 2009, is a direct result of Canada’s overuse of the word “sorry”. See, once upon a time, lawyers in court were probably able establish guilt quite easily. All they would have to do is prove someone apologized at the time of the incident and presto! the verdict would swing in their favour.

The third:

Now, don't you feel better knowing these Canadiana facts?

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Happiest man on earth. What an inspiration!! It goes to show that it is all about attitude and choices - that we can make the decision to be happy!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The TED talk speaker, Eddie Jaku is a remarkable person.  After barely surviving the first 25 years of his life in concentration camps and near starvation and then to go through the next 74 years and be so positive is inspirational.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Learn to Travel.  Life is a journey and we are where we ought to be. Travellers can be running from something or searching out something. So too can we be doing this right where we are. I agree life is enriched and broadened by meeting new people, seeing new things or simply living in a new environment.

Wonderful meeting. Thank you for the video about the orange shirt day. The club had members who did not know what the residential school experience was all about for our indigenous and other children too.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport

The speaker never mentioned the DR.  Here, too, it is safe to travel, and the people are wonderful and the country is beautiful.
-- Peter Denooy, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The World before vaccines is a world
we cannot afford to forget!

Boys at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Queens, New York, line up to receive the smallpox vaccine in April 1947. The disease had claimed two lives, spurring city health officials to launch
a mass vaccination program.

PUBLISHED AUGUST 16, 2019

Like most American children of my generation, I lined up with my classmates in the mid-1950s to get the first vaccine for polio, then causing 15,000 cases of paralysis and 1,900 deaths a year in the United States, mostly in children.

Likewise, we lined up for the vaccine against smallpox, then still causing millions of deaths worldwide each year. I’ve continued to update my immunizations ever since, including a few exotic ones for National Geographic assignments abroad, among them vaccines for anthrax, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, typhoid, and yellow fever.
