ABC Goals for Every Arena

The generalized version of the ABC Goal System:

• A Goal: Most ambitious, perfect case.
• B Goal: Middle ground, base case.
• C Goal: Minimum viable level, anything above zero compounds.

On days when you feel great, you hit your A Goal. On days when you feel ok (most days!), you hit your B Goal. On days when you feel bad, you hit your C Goal.

The ABC Goal System removes any intimidation or guilt: As long as you hit your C Goal, you're making forward progress.

The system prevents optimal (A Goal) from getting in the way of beneficial (C Goal) and gives you the flexibility to make progress while allowing the inevitable vagaries of life to enter.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

December 10. The TEDTalk by Mark Lukach on How to love through mental illness was very moving and an insight into what some people have to go through to overcome mental illness.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

December 13. Enjoyed the video on AI but really enjoyed the video on the Italian bears. Italy's efforts to coexist with the bears is very similar to that of Canmore in Alberta's Bow Valley. The Bow Valley is just a small section of a wildlife corridor that extends from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming to Alaska and the wildlife is not going away.
December 18. What does wealth mean to you? Really enjoyed this week’s Ted Talk video.
-- Patrick Gibson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

December 14. G. Hinton and the Development of AI. The Rotary International information was very interesting. The Food for Thought re pronouncing of words was good, and the speaker’s program was very informative.
-- Martin Secker, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040

What does Wealth mean to you? The most significant thing that I learned was from the "In the Zone" video about messaging continuity and collaboration, and the plan to shift from a presidential theme each year to an organizational theme. In addition, I learned the priorities to bring the RI Action Plan Initiative implementation to the club level:

1. Increase impact
2. Expand our reach
3. Enhance participant engagement
4. Increase our ability to adapt

I like your format. It is easy to follow, and you present interesting, thought-provoking, and also humorous/fun content that is current and up to date.

-- Elizabeth Rhoads, Rotary Club of Wilmington, Delaware, USA, District 7630

The Four Pillars of a Successful Club

Each of these four “pillars of success” has a key purpose in building and sustaining a vibrant club.

The pillars are

1) Membership
2) Programs
3) Projects
4) Fund Raising

Build on each of these pillars and you will develop an outstanding Rotary Club.

As many District clubs have learned these past years, club membership growth solves many issues facing Rotary clubs today. You will also find that growing membership is a cornerstone pillar in your club.

But club growth is not achieved with a focus only on adding new members, although that is obviously one requisite for growth.

In addition to the membership pillar, there are three additional pillars in the club foundation that must be strong in order to retain members.

1) The project pillar
2) The programs pillar, and
3) The fundraising pillar

 Rotary's theme for January is

Vocational Service

The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the second object, which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster:

• High ethical standards in business and professions
• The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
• The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society

As a Rotarian, how can you put these ideals into action? Consider these suggestions:

• Talk about your profession in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members’ occupations
• Use your skills and expertise to serve a community
• Practice your profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your words and actions
• Help young people achieve their career goals
• Guide and encourage others in their professional development

The Four-Way Test as a Moral Compass

By Kadam Bhambari

During a meeting of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown in Chandigarh, India, I encountered a little gem that has reshaped my perspective on ethics, decision-making, and being a better person. This secret code to navigating life’s moral maze was none other than The Four-Way Test.

To me, The Four-Way Test provides a simple but powerful set of questions that serve as a moral compass in both personal and professional realms. The first question asks, “Is it the TRUTH?” Imagine if we all took a pause before spreading news or sharing information, verifying if it’s as true as it claims to be. This question alone could revolutionize how we interact and understand the world around us.

Then comes, “Is it FAIR to all concerned?” Ah, fairness, the pillar of justice! This question pushes us to consider the impact of our decisions on everyone involved. I remember a situation at work where I had to assign tasks. Asking myself this question made me reconsider and reshuffle the workload to ensure fairness among my team.

Next up, “Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?” Now, this one’s a heart-warmer! It nudges us to think about fostering positive relationships and creating goodwill in our actions. I recall a time when a simple act of kindness — helping a neighbor with groceries — resulted in a lasting friendship.

And finally, “Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?” This question challenges us to assess the long-term consequences of our actions, making us mindful of creating genuine, lasting benefits for everyone involved.

The beauty of The Four-Way Test lies in its adaptability. It’s not about blindly following rules but about using these questions as a moral framework, a roadmap for making decisions that positively impact our communities and the world at large.

You don’t need to be a Rotarian to embrace this philosophy. Imagine if everyone integrated these questions into our daily lives! That’s why I’m throwing out the challenge — let’s try it for a week. Before making a decision, big or small, run it through The Four-Way Test.

Rotary’s commitment to these principles has fueled incredible projects worldwide, from eradicating polio to empowering communities through education and sustainable development. It’s a shining example of the incredible influence of prioritizing ethical decision-making and selfless service.

Let’s take a cue from Rotary and allow these questions to guide our actions. Let’s start a ripple effect of ethical decision-making that transforms our lives and the world around us. Remember, it all starts with asking the right questions.

Kadam is the spouse of Jeeten Bhambari, president of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown, India.
