Serendipity & Les Habitants: A Story of Riots,
Revolution & Rocket Richard
June 25, 2021

The Montreal Canadiens have made it to the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals. And the story of how they got there involves an absolutely bizarre set of coincidences, including riots, revolution and Rocket Richard.

It begins with a seemingly mundane fact: To get to the finals, the Habs won the Clarence Campbell Bowl for the first time in their 103-year history.

It's the first time ever because the trophy is normally reserved for teams from the league's Western Conference. But pandemic-driven rejigging meant the Canadiens — an Eastern Conference team — were placed in the Western Conference this year. And so, this was likely the only chance the Habs will ever get to win the Clarence Campbell Bowl — and against all the odds, as overwhelming underdogs, they actually did it.

So. That's pretty weird. But it's just the tip of the serendipity iceberg — not only because Clarence Campbell is a man with a particularly notorious connection to the Habs, but because yesterday was a particularly special day for a big Canadiens win.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

May 7. Re the Town Hall with RI President-Elect Gordon McInally. I am looking forward to Gordon McInally's presidential year, he seems very open to change. For example to quote "And the secret is to tap into people's interests and to make sure that they're allowed to do things that they want to do."
May 14. The video, Pale Blue Dot, really puts things into perspective. The earth is a small stage in a vast cosmic arena.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

May 15. Excellent choice of speakers this week! Our family members experienced a tragic event last fall with Hurricane Fiona. Judy’s brother’s house was washed away. We were not prepared for forced camping.
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

This month's Rotary theme

And Rotary's theme for July...

Rotary's monthly theme for July, "New Beginnings," signifies the start of a fresh chapter in the Rotary year. It encapsulates the spirit of embracing change, seeking new opportunities, and renewing commitments to service.

July presents a chance for Rotary clubs and members to reflect on their achievements thus far and set new goals for the year ahead. It's a time to welcome new members into the Rotary family, foster connections, and encourage innovative approaches to address community needs.

With "New Beginnings" as the theme, Rotarians can look forward to exciting possibilities, forge new partnerships, and make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.

THIS WEEK - Neil Young - Heart of Gold

Neil Young, a highly influential Canadian singer-songwriter, has had a prolific career with numerous popular hits. One of his most well-known and enduring songs is "Heart of Gold." Released in 1972 as part of his album "Harvest," "Heart of Gold" achieved significant commercial success and became Neil Young's only Number One hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"Heart of Gold" features Young's distinct vocals accompanied by acoustic guitar and harmonica. The song's introspective lyrics and melodic hooks resonated with audiences, making it a beloved and timeless classic. It has remained a staple in Neil Young's live performances and is often regarded as one of his greatest and most popular songs.

New members' corner

Rotary is a global network of professionals and community leaders who come together to make a positive impact in their local communities and around the world. Here are some key points you can share with new members about Rotary:

1. History and Purpose: Rotary was founded in 1905 in Chicago, and it has grown into an international organization with over 1.2 million members in more than 35,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary's main purpose is to promote goodwill and peace, while addressing important societal issues such as poverty, illiteracy, disease, and environmental sustainability.

2. Service Above Self: Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self," encapsulates the organization's commitment to selfless service and making a difference. Rotarians dedicate their time, expertise, and resources to improve the lives of others and create positive change in their communities.

3. Five Avenues of Service: Rotary focuses on five areas of service, known as the Avenues of Service: Club Service, Vocational Service, Community Service, International Service, and Youth Service. These avenues provide a framework for members to engage in various projects and initiatives that align with their interests and expertise.

4. Rotary Foundation: The Rotary Foundation is Rotary's charitable arm, supporting projects and programs worldwide. It funds initiatives in areas such as education, healthcare, clean water and sanitation, economic development, and peacebuilding. Through the foundation, Rotarians have the opportunity to contribute financially and participate in global grant projects.

5. Fellowship and Networking: Rotary offers a vibrant community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for service. Being a Rotarian provides excellent opportunities for networking, building meaningful relationships, and collaborating with professionals from diverse backgrounds and industries.

6. Leadership Development: Rotary provides numerous opportunities for leadership development, allowing members to enhance their skills, broaden their perspectives, and take on leadership roles within their clubs and beyond. Rotary's leadership training programs help members become effective leaders and catalysts for positive change.

7. Rotary's Impact: Rotary's impact is truly remarkable. From eradicating polio worldwide through the PolioPlus program to supporting local community projects, Rotary's efforts have touched millions of lives. As a member, you can contribute to ongoing initiatives and witness the tangible results of your service.

8. Fun and Fellowship: Rotary is not all about service; it's also about fostering camaraderie, having fun, and enjoying fellowship. Rotary clubs organize social events, meetings, and activities that provide opportunities for members to connect, bond, and create lifelong friendships.

9. Flexibility and Inclusivity: Rotary understands the diverse needs of its members and offers flexible meeting options and membership types. Rotary clubs meet at various times and locations, allowing individuals to participate based on their schedules. Rotary is also actively working to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization.

10. Engaging Youth: Rotary places great emphasis on engaging and empowering young people. Programs such as Interact (for high school students) and Rotaract (for young adults) provide opportunities for youth to develop leadership skills, participate in service projects, and make a positive impact while being mentored by experienced Rotarians.

These key points should give new members a good overview of Rotary's values, purpose, and opportunities for involvement. Remember to share your personal experiences and anecdotes to make it more engaging and relatable.

THIS WEEK - Michael Spyres

The aria "Largo al factotum" is one of the most famous and beloved pieces from Gioachino Rossini's opera "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville). The opera, with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini, premiered in 1816 in Rome, Italy.

"Largo al factotum" is sung by the character Figaro, a barber and jack-of-all-trades who is known for his wit, charm, and resourcefulness. The aria is sung in the first act of the opera and serves as an introduction to Figaro's character.

In the aria, Figaro proclaims his many skills and abilities, highlighting his role as a "factotum" or a person who can do everything. He boasts about his talents as a barber, a surgeon, and a matchmaker. The aria is characterized by its rapid-fire tempo, lively melody, and playful lyrics, showcasing Figaro's vivacious personality and his ability to handle any situation.

The lyrics of the aria are in Italian, and the catchy tune has made it one of the most recognizable and frequently performed pieces in the operatic repertoire. Its lively and humorous nature has captivated audiences for centuries, and it has been sung by numerous renowned baritones, becoming a signature piece for many.

"Largo al factotum" is often performed as a standalone piece in concert settings and is considered one of the highlights of "Il Barbiere di Siviglia." Its popularity has extended beyond the world of opera and has been featured in various adaptations and references in popular culture, further solidifying its place as one of the most iconic arias in classical music.
