Canadian
Indigenous water activist Autumn Peltier, 15, addressed hundreds of
international guests at UN headquarters in Manhattan on Saturday, where she
urged the global community to respect the sacredness and importance of clean
water.
"I've said
it once, and I'll say it again: we can't eat money or drink oil,"
said the activist from Wiikwemkoong First Nation on Manitoulin Island in
northern Ontario.
Peltier spoke at
the Global Landscapes Forum, a platform on sustainable land use founded by UN
Environment and the World Bank that's dedicated to achieving development and
climate goals.
She used the
speech to draw attention to the lack of clean water in numerous Indigenous
communities, which she says sparked her activism.
"All across
these lands, we know somewhere where someone can't drink the water. Why so
many, and why have they gone without for so long?"

February 15. Water is life: She left us with the question
that each of us should ask ourselves every single day - "What have I done
for water today?" We have grown comfortable in the way we waste and
abuse water. Soon it will be too late unless when change our lifestyle now and
make a commitment to use every ounce of water at least twice! For example,
water from washing dishes can be used to water non-edible plants. Even without
overhauling your plumbing system, you can catch your shower water and put it in
your washing machine or use it to flush your toilet. But as she said, we need
to make a conscious decision that we will no longer be contributors to the
problem, but that we will determine to part of the solution.

President-elect Holger Knaak has a clear vision of Rotary and as his
predecessors, encourages us to change and in fostering that idea, encourages
clubs to have annual strategic meetings. Every corporation has annual
strategic meetings. Why not Rotary Clubs? It would be so good to review past
successes and challenges and shine a light on the future road ahead.
Kelsey Leonard
presents an interesting concept of giving water the same rights as corporations
and humans. While I understand the possible desired outcomes and likely
benefits, I certainly would like to learn how that would work.

Very much enjoyed
this meeting. Great variety from Petra, the very clever parrot to the 5
Browns performing Rhapsody in Blue and the TED talk about how we should value
water much more by Kelsy Leonard.

Gina Murphy
Darling. We are fortunate to live in a
community that has considerable awareness of the issues identified by Ms.
Darling. However, her talk reinforces the need to grow greater awareness and
tackle the issues that impact our environment.

February 26. With my feet up on a stool and a glass of
choco-milk, I learned that Rotarians are deeply involved in DOGOODERY. Maybe it

ROTARY
INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
We regret to
announce that the Rotary International Convention, scheduled for 6-10 June 2020
in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, has been canceled due to the ongoing threat of
COVID-19.
As the virus
continues to spread rapidly around the world, we made the difficult decision to
cancel our annual convention to protect the health and safety of our members, staff, attendees, and the local Honolulu community. Learn more.

MEETINGS
In the near term,
Rotary International recommends that districts and Rotary and Rotaract clubs
meet virtually, cancel, or postpone meetings or events following the advice of
national and local health officials.
Please continue
to follow the guidelines set by the World Health
Organization and your national, regional, or local health authorities to
protect your health and safety. If feasible, conduct meetings online or by
phone.

Each Thursday Morning from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. (MDT) we host a casual FellowSIP Coffee Chat.

Almonds, blended and strained in substantial quantities to satisfy our collective thirst for nut milk, have travelled a great distance to become a coffee shop staple.
Native to the Tian Shan Mountains of Central Asia, California’s Central Valley produces more than three-quarters of the world’s supply. Grown in mega-farms wholly reliant on honeybees for pollination, it’s the insects that now must do the travelling.
As with more than one-third of our food species, almonds require pollination help. And with blossoms of blush and white blooming on millions of trees simultaneously, local pollinators simply can’t keep up. Packed into boxes, loaded onto trucks and transported en masse to a vast artificial forest, California’s
$14-billion almond industry depends on bees-for-hire, which are dying at unprecedented rates.
Fifty-billion bees — 40 per cent of America’s honeybee colonies — didn’t survive last winter, according to a nationwide survey. “The high mortality rate creates a sad business model for beekeepers,” Nate Donley, a senior scientist for the Center for Biological Diversity, told The Guardian. “It’s like sending the bees to war. Many don’t come back.”
