Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Matt Tenney's Food for Thought was quite engaging.  I was intrigued by the fact the speaker had been in prison, became a monk and now is a TED speaker. But his message of looking after your employees which in turn has employees looking after the customers makes for a successful company.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Fundraising, Week of February 3 to 9.  I honestly enjoyed it from beginning to end.

That "fundraiser" Ted Talk was educational. What stuck in my mind was her statements that an effective fundraiser must have supports and resources in order to make it a success.  This is so very true. Some of her listed techniques were inspirational and I found the session to be educational.

I had no idea that "The Moth" existed.  I enjoy writing and reading so this was a huge bonus/discovery for me. I found journalist, Sebastian Junger's, storytelling on "War" to be an eye-opener, a visual and mental journey introducing the listener to the realities of war and their ongoing consequences.

I liked the Inspiration Moment: Nights of the Northern Lights. Visually stunning,  truly inspirational, illustrates the natural beauty and wonder that makes our world a poetic place.

I really enjoyed this session.  It had a little bit of everything to keep me interested.  Thank you kindly for all your work in putting these sessions together.
-- Mary-Lisa Russo, Hamilton Tonic Rotary After 5, District 7090

Loved the inspirational video on the  Aurora Borealis – spectacular!
-- Sue Croft, Rotary Club of Barrie, District 7010

From Rotarian Sharon

Spring flowers are blooming in my part of the world.

Our members are located everywhere, but we can make a difference locally.

We are launching our second "Little Bit of Service" community project - for Spring.

Who do you know that could use some help with yard cleanup?

Or perhaps you could join in a community-wide cleanup effort?

Our focus with this project is engaging youth. Invite a child or youth to help out and they can enjoy the benefits of Spring, the great outdoors and volunteering!

Send your project description and any before- and after-photos to sblaker@shaw.ca

Let's make this as successful as our Holiday Little Bit of Service!

Greetings from Hamilton, Ontario!
Our quarterly Foundation winner!

My name is Mary-Lisa Russo and my Rotary base is Tonic Hamilton Rotary After Five. I’ve been a Rotarian since April 2018, a baby duckling of our group, forever exploring Rotary and its meaning within our club and other clubs around the world.

I am quite fascinated with the dynamics of Rotary, its global outreach, its faithfulness in executing “service above self.”  I am involved on other boards outside of Rotary which makes my attraction to being a Rotarian very natural.

One of the main Rotary projects I am happy to be an Event Ambassador and volunteer at is the “Telling Tales” Children’s Literacy Festival wherein Rotarians and community-minded folks work together to promote reading, education, peace, and community. It is the brainchild of respected Rotarian, Susan Jaspar, the festival’s Founder and Executive Director, a Rotarian I look up to and hold in high regard.

Rotary has so much to offer its members within an international scale.  What Rotary offers does not stop at the door of your club. It is crucial to think outside the box, outside of your own club, to shape, to create, to grow…it’s a bright world out there and I am happy to say I am still evolving, still learning, still exploring…

Rotary minute

To celebrate its 100th year, The Rotary Foundation recognized a number of global grants that  exemplify what a project should be: a sustainable endeavor that aligns with one of Rotary’s areas of focus and that is designed in cooperation with the community to address a real need.

Here is one such noteworthy project.  It demonstrates how your club can leverage the resources of the Foundation to do good in the world.

Host sponsor:  Rotary Club of Valle de Guatemala, Guatemala

International sponsor:  Rotary Club of Manhattan Beach, California, USA

Total budget:  $39,873

Background:  Students attending overcrowded schools in poverty-stricken areas of Guatemala face bullying and street violence.  Crimes stemming from gang and drug activity are common.

Scope:  Project sponsors worked with Alianza Joven, a Guatemalan organization focused on preventing crime and violence, to train students in four municipalities around Guatemala City on techniques for deflecting aggressiveness, strengthening leadership, making decisions, and serving their communities.  Teachers, principals, and parents were involved.

Impact:  More than 6,500 teachers and students received training.

Fun fact:  The project sponsors connected at a project fair in Antigua, Guatemala.

Speaker Program

Abeny Mathayo Kucha is a single mother who survived the civil war and genocide in her homeland of South Sudan and immigrated to the U.S.  Here she became a certified nursing assistant and worked at the Mayo Clinic for almost ten years as a surgical processing tech.

She is the mother of two daughters.  Atong, her oldest, recently graduated from law school in May 2012.  Abeny is proud to say what a joy it was to see her accomplish her dream of becoming a lawyer, because few refugees’ children graduate high school, let alone attend college.

Abeny also has three sons and one grandson.  She lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, and is the  author of “Tears of a Mother: A Sudanese Survivor’s Story,” her first book about  her life while living in Sudan.  For more information on Abeny’s book and other  projects, visit her website at tearsofamother.com.
