Inspirational moment

In 1989, I was away from my home in Malaysia attending the University of Kansas in the USA. I found an advertisement for a summer job as a programmer at Forschungsinstitut fur anwendungsorientierte Wissenverarbeitung an der Universitat Ulm in what was then West Germany. I was delighted to be offered the job; it was a good opportunity to see part of a new continent.

Naturally, I expected things would be different — big things, like language and culture — but I never expected small cultural differences would affect me. Both Malaysia and the USA emerged from the British Empire, so we have common standards for the way many things are done. For example, I was surprised that little things like how doors fit into doorframes were different.

The bread was also very different. While it was fun at first to eat the various kinds of brotchen, after some time I longed for the white, square, soft bread I was used to. And the big things were not that bad: the folks in the village of Ulm mostly didn't speak English well, but were very friendly and helpful nonetheless.

One of these small differences, however, tripped me up early in my stay.

The first few days, my employer put me up in a bed-and-breakfast hotel. Then I found a small studio apartment to rent. It was evening by the time I got settled in, and I walked down to the village to buy some provisions. To my surprise and horror, every single shop was closed!

I was alone with no food or any other kind of provisions. I wandered around for a while in a daze. I was about to walk back to the apartment, resigned to taking a soapless shower, going to bed without supper, and having no breakfast the next morning.

Then I saw a university student. Why are the shops all closed? He explained that (unlike in the USA where there are all-night grocery stores, or Malaysia, where grocery stores are open late at night) all shops in Germany (in 1989) closed at 6:00 p.m.

But he didn't leave it at that. He took me back to his room and shared his supper with me. Not only that, he took out a knife and cut off half his bar of soap, and gave me half his cheese and half of his bread. He gave it all to me so I would be able to shower and have breakfast the next morning!

It was clear that he did not possess much. But what he had, he was willing to share with a poor Auslander (foreigner) wandering the streets of his village. Although we exchanged contact information, I didn't see him much after that. In the sixteen years since, I've even forgotten his name. But I still remember his kind deed, which has inspired similar actions in my own life. He is one of the biggest reasons I think fondly of my time in Germany.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

October 15. In spite of so many people castigating the internet and social media in Missan Harriman’s TED talk, he tells how it was a lifeline to the future for him and now his photographs, including those protesting against racism, have been viewed around the world.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 18. Watched the new member video and the video on salmon, which I really enjoyed.
-- Patrick Gibson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 18. Wild is Best. A Conversation about Hatcheries. Food for Thought: Pay attention to the important (big) things in life and don't worry about the small stuff -- there is always time for a beer with a friend. This provided a good visual representation as well as providing good advice for all of us. Your site is easy to follow, except when you get to the “Donate” button. When I click on that button, I can’t easily get back to this makeup form.
-- Elizabeth Rhoads, Rotary Club of Wilmington Delaware, District 7630

October 23. Inspiring words from President McInally in the August 2 meeting.
-- Angel Francisco Blanco Garcia, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Humour

and and quick laugh -

***
New members' corner

For new Rotarians, there are several important things to learn and understand to fully engage with Rotary International and make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Here are some key points that will also serve as a good reminder for more experienced Rotarians:

1. Rotary's Mission and Values - to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace.

2. Rotary’s Core Values - service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership.

3. The Four-Way Test

4. Rotary's Organizational Structure – including Rotary clubs, districts, and the international organization.

5. Rotary's Programs - including the eradication of polio, youth exchange programs, vocational training, and community service projects.

6. Fellowship and Networking – Rotarians should learn and make use of the opportunities for fellowship and networking with like-minded individuals who are committed to making a difference in the world.

7. Service Projects - Rotary is known for its service projects that address community needs. New Rotarians, and all Rotarians, should participate in and contribute to these projects, understanding that service is at the heart of Rotary's mission.

8. Rotary Foundation - Learn about the Foundation's work and how all Rotarians can contribute to it through donations and grant applications.

9. Rotary's Code of Conduct – including expected behavior and ethical standards within the organization.

10. Leadership Opportunities - Rotarians should be open to taking on leadership roles, both in the club and beyond, to contribute to the organization's success.

11. Rotary's Global Impact - Rotarians should understand the global impact of Rotary's work and how they can contribute to international projects and partnerships.

By embracing these principles and getting involved in Rotary's work, Rotarians can make a meaningful difference in their communities and the world.

DAWE: 100 years of Rotary Club in Red Deer

...submitted by Rotarian Tammy

February 23, 2023 marked the centennial of the oldest continuous service club in our city – the Rotary Club of Red Deer. It is one of 46,000 Rotary clubs world-wide with nearly 1.4 million members.

The first Rotary Club was formed on February 23, 1905, when Paul Harris, an attorney in Chicago, Illinois, invited three friends to help start a diverse club of business people and professionals which would foster a spirit of fellowship and provide service to their community.

The idea of forming a local Rotary Club was proposed as Red Deer was coming through one of the most difficult times, economically and socially, in its history. The community had been devasted by the horrific First World War followed by the Spanish ‘flu epidemic, then the worst inflation ever recorded and finally a harsh economic depression with local unemployment surging to nearly 25%.
