Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

July 25. Thoroughly enjoyed the Moth speaker on the topic “Guilty.” Very genuine.
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Guilty. Very moving. Our justice system is far from perfect but, we all have a responsibility. It was interesting that the experience changed this woman. Didn't like Amazon no-people store. Just means fewer jobs. Re bikes: I often think about how a bicycle changes things for people here in Guatemala. Means the difference between being able to get to a job or not.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Guilty. Online make-ups are always easy to do and convenient.
-- Rick Gibson, Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise, District 5020

July 28. Loved the speaker program. Danusia Trevino was both funny and heart-felt.
-- Jim Ferguson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 29. Today, on another smoky day, I decided to attend one of our Web Meetings while I was scheduled to pay bills, wash floors, and prepare lunch. I do not regret it. Kitty's welcome message was delightful. I saved the Aboriginal Story for another (supposed-to-do-housework) day. I joined the AD Rotary Action Group. Do not approve of Amazon's new store concept and was deeply touched by the Moth speaker. Well done!
-- Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 31. I found the Canadiana article and the attendant item very interesting with a brief history of the First Nations and how their relations, with the arrival of the European settlers, evolved.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

August 2. Hello Jim K. and others. Once again, I watched Jim’s recital of the Four-Way Test along with its history, and I am very happy to know that this particular video is so very inspiration. Thank you, Jim!
I will use it again and again, and I do trust that all who view our weekly meetings will follow through with the video and the test, learning both the back-story and the test itself by heart and from memory!

-- Kitty Bucsko, E-Club of Canada One Associate Member, District 5370

Polio Survivor and What’s the Carrington Event. Admired the wheelchair shot-put athlete, and was fascinated by the effect the sun has on our earth.
-- Martin Secker, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040

GINGER ALE

The “Champagne of Ginger Ales” was created by John James McLaughlin – who graduated from the Ontario College of Pharmacy, affiliated with U of T – in 1885. After managing one of Brooklyn’s largest drugstores, the pharmacist founded a soda-water and beverage company.

In 1904, McLaughlin created Canada Dry Ginger Ale – which was far less sweet than other ginger ales on the market. And the Temperance Movement helped popularize it: teetotallers liked the drink because it was a tasty alternative to alcohol, while tipplers found it disguised the taste of homemade gin.

While Canada Dry is now owned by an American company, it is still branded with its very Canadian label: the crown and shield.

HOCKEY

Countless Canadians have contributed to the development of hockey since its origins in the 19th century, but one U of T grad made an outsized impact in the early days of the National Hockey League.

In 1927, Conn Smythe (BASc 1920) – a former captain of the Varsity Blues who had guided the team to a provincial championship – was part of a group that bought the NHL’s struggling Toronto franchise and renamed it the Maple Leafs.

Four years later, he played a major role in building the arena that for almost seven decades was the team’s home ice.

As the Leafs’ owner, and sometime general manager and head coach, Smythe helped bring the Stanley Cup to Toronto eight times in 35 years – a track record that current fans can only envy. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958, and the league’s annual trophy for the most valuable player in the playoffs bears his name.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

July 18. Great meeting!! I loved the inspirational message, "Together we can make a difference." I am going to show it to our Rotary Interactors and suggest they adopt the pledges! And thank you for the great write-up about our organization, Creating Opportunities for Guatemalans.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 20. Another amazing meeting. The Boogie Woogie Twins were a great way to start my day. The creativity talk by Ethan Hawke really resonated with me. "Art as sustenance" and "vital" to us is so true. As a gardener I can relate!

And the Fellowship Event. Thank you Tammy for your Presidential year! and looking forward to President Keith’s year.

-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 14 and 20. The Fellowship Event. It was a treat for me to be able to attend a Fellowship Event. I appreciated the 10:00 a.m. start! Merci!
-- Doug Dyer, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 23. Quite a surprise about Canadian products, I had always assumed that Cervélo bikes were Italian. And we have to applaud a Kelowna Company, Formashape, which is a world leader making thousands of water slides each year, even ones for Disney Cruise ships.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Guilty. A Very moving Presentation about the life changing effects of kindness and gentleness of a jury member. I enjoyed hearing about another life-changing project that provided bicycles to rural communities through a payment process giving not only dignity but community access.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

July 26. Loved the inspirational Video about the bike in Zambia. The people were so happy to have a bike and appreciated it so much. It was also interesting about the Go Amazon store; I wonder what happens when you are charged the incorrect price for something, undercharged, or overcharged. Another great meeting with wonderful content. Thanks!
-- Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
