Have you heard of Choir! Choir! Choir!?

Apologies if you find this "too long," but it's truly Canadiana, and a very interesting musical topic!  Enjoy it - a little, a little more, or the whole video!  And celebrate our Canadian talent!

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

I had no idea of the amount of money that Cybercrime was being netted by criminals.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

We need to hear that Rotary anthems more often. It has great lyrics and a great message.
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Several years ago I watched Terry Fator live. He is indeed the most incredible "buikspreker" I ever saw.
-- Peter Denooy, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Enjoyed Jean Michel's photos of his trip to Calgary remembrance of veterans’ cemetery, comments, and link to his place of origin.  A unique but very valuable reflection for November 11, Remembrance day.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport

How we’re using dogs to sniff out malaria.  The program discusses how we give off certain specific odors especially when we are infected with diseases.  Detecting who is infected sometimes has been a difficult task; however, experiments have been done using clothing items gathered to compile data on the specific smells given off of those with malaria.

The experiments started originally testing mosquitos with electrodes and passing certain smells past them and their reaction. Mosquitoes depend on smell to seek out a host to feed off.  They then started using dogs since they have a high sense of smell and are trainable.

Experts gathered socks worn by children with and without malaria and used then to train to dogs to sniff out who had malaria and who didn't. The program showed a dog picking out the correct sock worn by an infected person out of the four the dog had to walk by and sniff. This experiment will lead to a simpler way for doctors to seek out malaria and treat people and stop the spread of malaria parasite.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Cyber Security.  Cyber security is an ongoing threat that we may not speak about or hear about on a regular basis, yet it is a threat that blankets every moment of our daily lives. Just because we don't hear about it does not mean it does not exist.
This program reminds us that the implementation of precautionary measures are necessary in protecting oneself or an organization to combat cyber criminals.
-- Mary-Lisa Russo, Hamilton Rotary After Five, District 7090

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Navi Radjou.  The topic discussed was on frugal innovation. Inventions in some countries were developed because of not making do but out of limited resources.
A man in India made a fridge of clay that kept fruits and vegetables fresh for days with no energy required.  In Lima Peru where the humidity is high but there is less than 1 " of rainfall a year a person invented a billboard that absords humidty and produces 90 litres a water a day.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Very interesting TED talk by the photographer who has witnessed so many trying to get to another country in the hope of having a better life.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Cyber Crime Fighter.  Caleb Barlow from IBM talks about the different forms of. Cyber crime and how it has become a $ 450 economy.  Companies need to be willing to share their real time intel on threats and how they are dealing with fighting the criminals to be able to stop them.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Caleb Barlow.  Where is CyberCrime really coming from?  Great timing for me to attend this meeting – I just got a call with a recorded voice that says I’m going to jail because of an issue with Service Canada and I have to speak with a Magistrate or the sky will fall on my head! Press 1.  This program provided a very important message which needs to be shared – thank you! Oh for the good ‘ol days when spam was just a lunch meat!!
-- John Wojcicki, Rotary Club of Edmonton, District 5370

Caleb Barlow.  It is an empowering perspective to understand that we can approach cybercrime like to tackle a medical/health crisis (i.e., sharing timely info re who is infected & how is disease spreading).

-- Velma Noble, RCCHP, District 5360

CAKE #1

Here is the recipe handwritten by my friend Jean Scott who was an amazing woman!  She died in 2015, two months before her 103rd birthday and battled cancer twice and received numerous federal, provincial and university awards for her work with labour unions and as an advocate for equality and fairness for all, especially women and children!  This was her mom's recipe.  Her mom also lived to a very old age!  She was a dear friend of ours and a mentor to me.  Our four daughters always loved to have a visit and tea with Jean.

This time of the year is difficult as she was a gifted pianist and our family had many Christmas sing-a-longs with her.

I make two kinds of cakes, bake them in small loaf pans, and spread the joy to family and friends.  My husband is a fan of Christmas cake so it doesn't last long!

CAKE #2

This is a cake that I have been making for 25 years but it is not "Jean's" cake.  With all my cakes, I use a skewer and poke holes and pour a little Cointreau, brandy, or rum over them.  Then I wrap them in saran wrap or cheesecloth, then in foil, and store in a cool place.  I make my cakes no later than six weeks before Christmas, preferably eight weeks.

How do I start?

Get the most out of your membership by participating in club projects and activities.
Here are some ideas:

  • Identify a need in your community and suggest a hands-on project to address it
  • Work with a youth service program sponsored by your club, such as  or
  • Host a  student
