Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

March 3. If people could grasp the understanding that the earth is a sentient being and that our relationship with the earth is a reciprocal one, that would change everything!!!!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Decarbonization. I always enjoy the music selections.
-- Gary McLelan, Rotary Club of Campbell River (Noon), District 5020

March 3. The speaker on the oil and gas industry reducing emissions, Bjorn Svedrup of Equinor, makes a point that his company is building a wind farm in the North Sea and this will cut the use of hydrocarbons. But the need for oil and gas will continue for many years. Canadian oil and gas companies have made a commitment to reduce emissions to zero by 2050.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One District 5370

24 to 30 April is World Immunization Week

World Immunization Week, celebrated in the last week of April, aims to highlight the collective action needed and to promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease.

Through its convening power, WHO works with countries across the globe to raise awareness of the value of vaccines and immunization and ensures that governments obtain the necessary guidance and technical support to implement high-quality immunization programmes.

The ultimate goal of World Immunization Week is for more people – and their communities – to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases.

GROUNDWATER - MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE THROUGH ROTARY

Posted on March 10, 2022 by rotaryservice

By Erica Gwynn, Area of Focus Manager for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (M.S., MPH)

What if I told you that you were standing on top of a treasure – a treasure that is hidden from view, slowly flowing between cracks and spaces of the soil, sand and rock beneath your feet? I’m speaking of a treasure that plays a crucial role in human sustenance and global food security through drinking water supplies and irrigated agriculture. The treasure I’m referring to is groundwater, the largest available global freshwater resource.

Click here to read more from Rotary Service.

The human right to water entitles everyone to use sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses. Clean water wherever found is essential to human survival: environmental degradation does not only render a scarce resource unusable; it also destroys natural ecosystems that support food production and biodiversity with repercussions for human health and eventually environmental security.

Groundwater has been estimated to provide almost half of all drinking water worldwide with approximately 2.5 billion people depending solely on this resource to satisfy their daily needs for water. Being the primary source of water available on earth today, the connection between a human right to water and the need to properly manage the scarce underground transboundary resources are significant. It is therefore vital to comprehend and account for groundwater dependence and the quantity and quality utilized.

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

February 21. Sitting is bad. A year ago, I bought an elevated computer tray so that I could stand while I worked. Time to pull it out and put it into service!!!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

February 26. After seeing the desecration of the Terry Fox memorial in Ottawa recently the video was a great reminder of how his run for cancer research has motivated so many to emulate him worldwide with the annual Terry Fox run. The Ted Talk on insulin and our overconsumption of refined sugar was very instructive.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

How to realistically decarbonise oil. Really enjoyed How to try a little Kindness musical presentation by Jane Arden and the youth. Imagine how different our world could be with all using this goal.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

February 28. Another great meeting! I loved the inspiration moment as it was a great reminder that no one can be a better you than you, and the humor video - the lawyer who insured his cigars from fire – so funny!
-- Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

March 3. This week’s meeting. Wonderful video on "Land Acknowledgement.”
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

In Mexico’s migrant shelters, a Rotary scholar puts his education into action

Story and photos by Levi Vonk

There are two inescapable elements of southern Mexico.

The first is dust – desert rock ground to a powder that finds its way into your every crevice: the backs of your knees, the folds of your eyelids. You cough it up as you drift to sleep and discover its brume settled across your bedsheets in the morning.

The second element is violence.

I found both on the gritty tracks of the Beast.

Among those apprehended at the U.S.-Mexican border between October 2015 and January 2016 were 24,616 families – the vast majority of them from Central America.

Over the past half-century, millions of Central Americans have crossed Mexico from south to north, fleeing poverty, decades-long civil wars, and, most recently, brutal gangs.
