A new glow-in-the-dark coin was the first of its kind entered into circulation, according to the Royal Canadian Mint.
The CA$2 “toonie” features a view of the blue-green aurora borealis above two canoeists paddling along a tree-lined lake. In the dark, the special ink used to produce the image illuminates the northern lights.
The mint has struck a number of special edition glow-in-the-dark coins in the past, but the new toonie was the first to be put in circulation.
Other luminescent coins feature similar scenes of Canada’s natural landscape, along with a series based on star signs. A collectors’ coin featuring the red-and-white national flag set against glow-in-the-dark exploding fireworks is also being sold in celebration of the Canadian sesquicentennial.
“The mint has a long history of innovation in the coin business,” said mint spokesman Alex Reeves. “We like to demonstrate our capabilities to our customers.”

“It’s something special to add to the celebration” of the sesquicentennial, Reeves said.
About 3 million toonies were made for circulation, which were sent to distribution centers where coins are stored and where banks resupply themselves, according to Reeves.
Two Canadian dollars are equal to about $1.51 in American currency — but these limited-edition toonies will likely price above their exchange rate in a trade with a coin collector.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
January 1. The TED talk, The power of unconventional thinking by David McWilliams, was absolutely spellbinding. He encapsulates so much that is failing in our society today.
January 6. Nice story on the Moth video about the Italian grandmother and her concern for her family and granddaughter. And making sure they always had enough to eat.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
January 8. Watched all the videos, loved the performing dogs and terrified by the melting perma-frost.
January 18. As usual, an awesome selection of material.
-- Patrick Gibson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Arun Gandhi – Lessons from Gandhi, The Violence within us. Powerful concept that we must fully understand violence (track it on all levels & its impact) in order to begin to understand nonviolence, enroute to cultivating peace (within & in society).
-- Velma Noble, Rotary Club of Calgary, Heritage Park, District 5360

Using the pseudonym Brian Bilston, he began publishing short and pithy, often humorous, poems on Twitter, which were then spread widely on social media. Bilston gained up to 400,000 followers, and has been described as "The Poet Laureate of Twitter". The poet Ian McMillan described him as "a laureate for our fractured times", and he has been compared to Don Marquis, Dorothy Parker, and Ogden Nash.

Lending our influence
Rotarians from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, proposed before the 1914 Rotary Convention that the International Association of Rotary Clubs (now Rotary International) “lend its influence to the maintenance of peace among the nations of the world.” Delegates at the convention, which took place just weeks before Europe became engulfed in war, agreed.
It was a bold statement for a relatively young organization that had become international only two years earlier and had a presence in just a handful of countries.
