Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

January 21. I enjoyed the story about Magnetic Hill, near Moncton, and the lady who started a cafe and created a tourist attraction.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 21. Another meeting that I watched every single second and shared a few clips on my FB page. Loved the 4-Way test speech contest - wonder if it is still occurring? Always enjoy the BBC Earth videos and David Attenborough - and who doesn't love magic and singing children. Great meeting!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Interesting meeting, in part light-hearted, that taught me how far Alberta was from Wales but also that perhaps Orangutans should only imitate us to teach us how to preserve our environment unless we see the human future in the form of a brainless jellyfish in another 650 million years.
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Own your own face. Very painful sharing about living with disfigurement and how others try to offer changes to your appearance.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport

January 27. Another awesome weekly meeting. Wowed by the salt mine in Poland! Speaker program, Own your Face, is especially pertinent for most of us, considering our age and the quantity of wrinkles we now 'own.' Only Western Culture looks down on the face that shows life experience and gained wisdom. “Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art.” – Stanislaw Jerzy Lec
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

1. Lake Superior contains 10 percent of all planet Earth’s fresh surface water.

2. It covers 82,000 sq km (31,700 sq mi) with an average depth of 147 metres or 483 feet.

3. The deepest point in the lake is 405 metres or 1,333 feet.

4. There have been about 350 shipwrecks recorded in Lake Superior and Lake Superior is known to not give up her dead. Over 10,000 lives have been lost in her waters.

5. Lake Superior is, by surface area, the largest lake in the world.

6. It contains as much water as all the other Great Lakes combined, plus three extra Lake Eries!

7. There is enough water in Lake Superior to cover all of North and South America with water one foot deep.

8. There are 78 different species of fish that call the big lake home.

9. The maximum wave ever recorded on Lake Superior was 9.45 metres or 31 feet high.

10. If you stretched the shoreline of Lake Superior out to a straight line, it would be long enough to reach from Duluth, Minnesota to the Bahamas.

11. Over 300 streams and rivers empty into Lake Superior with the largest source being the Nipigon River in Ontario.

12. The average underwater visibility of Lake Superior is about 8 metres or 27 feet, making it the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes. Underwater visibility in some spots reaches 30 meters.

13. In the summer, the sun sets more than 35 minutes later on the western shore of Lake Superior than at its southeastern edge.

14. Some of the world's oldest rocks, formed about 2.7 billion years ago, can be found on the Ontario shore of Lake Superior.

15. It very rarely freezes over completely.

16. The average temperature of Lake Superior is 36°F or 2°C... very refreshing on a hot summer day!

17. The Trans-Superior International Yacht Race is the world's longest freshwater sailboat race.

18. Lake Superior has its own tide.

19. Changes in water levels are more noticeable from prevailing winds pushing water to the Eastern shore.

20. The dense basalts of Lake Superior acted like a wall or brake for the glaciers 18,000 years ago, which is why there is a driftless area in Wisconsin today.

21. Lake Superior had a song written by Gordon Lightfoot called The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

22. After a big storm, Lake Superior always churns up stuff from the past and it ends up on the shores of the big lake. These items can be lake glass, old lumber, old pull tabs off of beer and pop cans and coal used in old factories.

23. If all water were drained from the North American continent, the low point of Lake Superior would be the lowest point of land on the continent.

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Meeting in January. Vocational service projects. The David Bowie singers and dancers were a hoot, and I did not know about Magnetic Hill.
-- Irene Makar, new member of E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Loved the music “Sing.” Message from Wales combining groups to result in better decisions about longer-term thinking and leaving the world a better place is something our town council needs to hear. Yes, they have an environment committee, but one of many and no combination with health care. A good mix of topics and material for everyone!
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

Meetings January 4 and 27. Great meetings. Thank you for the ongoing effort.
-- Doug Dyer, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Lessons on leaving the world better than you found it. Sophie Howe. Wales instituted a new government position, a first of its kind being a "future generations commissioner" position. Sophie Howe is tasked with making sure institutions answer to her in setting goals and reaching those goals to leave behind a better place for future generation "to be born yet." This includes things such as low carbon emissions as an example.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

THIS WEEK - a story contributed by Rotarian Jim Kenyon

Up on the Roof

When I first started to visit, commute, and eventually moved to The Yukon, there was a lovely couple in the apartment below me in Toronto. Anita offered to water my plants and look after the place during my many trips north. She told stories before she met her husband of sharing an apartment with 4 gay guys. Good arrangement, except they always had to check out her boyfriends…

When Anita married, the 4 guys moved to an apartment above a bar on Spadina. Gave them a chance to sit out on a secluded deck in the back, smoke, and sing their hearts out. One day, Marc came by and asked if she had any old nylons. He explained that they wanted to try to sing publicly and they needed the props.

Early in their career, they went to a world competition in Japan for a cappella singing. They blew all competition out of the water, easily won, and never bothered to go back since they felt they had nothing further to prove.

I had the pleasure of going to several of their concerts and became a lifelong fan. A few years later, the group was wiped out in the AIDS epidemic.

So, here’s a couple of their creations. And please note two things. There are no instruments or percussion. None. Just four guys, four microphones, and yes, those are Anita’s NYLONS.

Here are two additional links if you have the interest.

Thanks, Jim!!
