Gabriel Gély, shown here in his studio, left hundreds of photos that document life in Canada's North from 1954 to 1987. (University of Manitoba Archives & Special Collections, Gabriel Gély Fonds)
Gabriel Gély, a French painter who spent much of his life alongside the Inuit, died at the end of November in Selkirk, Man., at the age of 96. To the University of Manitoba, he left his archival collection of photos that document the lives of people in the Canadian North from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Nothing predestined Gély, who was born in Paris, France, in 1924, to live the majority of his life in the Canadian Far North. But after participating in the resistance during the Second World War, a young Gély fell in love with the Canadian Arctic after seeing an exhibition of Inuit art in the storefront of the Librairie Sainte-Beuve in Paris. He gathered all his savings and left for Canada in 1952.

Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
January 3. The story of the trash cart superheroes is great. It just took someone to recognize the worth of these people that we so often look down on and pity, as they try to make a livelihood.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
December 30. Someone had a lot of fun with the computer gender article.
-- Jim Kenyon, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
December 29. The meeting with the trash cart superheroes was interesting. These people are truly unsung heroes.
-- Diane Ellis, Rotary Club of Saint City, St. Albert, Alberta, District 5370
Abdi Nor iftin. I was glad to pick this meeting as I know the greeter, Janet Stead. The speaker program was compelling and a reminder of the fortunate birthright we Canadians share. Also interesting was the story of world navigator Joshua Slocum.
-- Don Smith, Rotary Club of Bracebridge, District 7010
January 4. Important message from Wale Elegbede from a Muslim American and how he built bridges. The meeting focused on how COVID has affected individuals, Rotary, and other organizations. Healing Little Hearts, and how the NGO continued with its important service moved my heart! Great Meeting!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Excellent uplifting and educational presentations from a trip to the Yukon and presentations of the concept of in-person virtual meeting to Wale Elegbege’s experience with hate. I also had to watch Lara's Theme Youtube video a few times as I enjoyed the various sculptures. A lot of material to absorb, share with friends but also to debate.
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Program Donations
Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.
Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.
We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.
As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
