Inspirational moment

Nigeria owes Japan $76 million for a polio eradication loan.

As some leaders are increasing their focus on issues solely within their own borders, Bill and Melinda Gates continue to show the importance of looking outward — and they’ve demonstrated this yet again by announcing they will settle Nigeria’s $76 million debt to Japan.

Nigeria’s debt to Japan is the result of Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) provided by the Japanese government in 2014 for increased polio eradication efforts.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Dogoodery.  Very inspiring story!!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The ohhh-and-awww start caused me to think what is fellowship anyway? I have concluded this is an old word with little familiarity to young people today unless they have been exposed to church vocabulary at some time.

I think we need a new word, such as belonging, which had attracted Chris in a dark time in his life. Every time I hear the word fellowship, memories cause me to step back. Now that I realize this, I’ll try to substitute another word or words. What do you think?
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport

Peace Fellows.  There is no doubt that we need more peace fellows in position of leadership, and as we see those barricades on railroads, I wonder how many do we need to resolve issues rooted in the past? Personally, I admit that I am confused.
Who Packs Your Parachute?  "Who packs your parachute in life” touched me the most as there are so many people that I take for granted. Time to pause and perhaps make a list.
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The Kindness of Patriots.  I liked the fact that friends supported the young man because he was innocent, and they showed him that America encourages diversity.
-- Steve Sandlin, Rotary Club of Decatur Daybreak, District 6360

Really enjoyed Peace by Chocolate.  So reassuring to hear such a strong patriotic message from a man who is obviously feeling blessed to become a Canadian.  We still have so far to go in our societal ability to be tolerant!
-- Sue Croft, Rotary Club of Barrie, District 7010

Humour

My husband and I went through the McDonald's driveway window and I gave the cashier a $5 bill.  Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c.

She said, “you gave me too much money.”

I said, “Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar back.”

She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request.

I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said “We're sorry but we don’t do that kind of thing.” The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change.

We had to have the garage door repaired.  The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a “large” enough motor on the opener.  I thought for a minute and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.

He shook his head and said, “You need a 1/4 horsepower.”  I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, “NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.”

We haven't used that repairman since.

*****

I live in a semi-rural area.  We recently had a new neighbor call the local city council office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road. The reason: “Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.”

*****

My daughter went to a Mexican fast-food restaurant and ordered a taco. She asked the person behind the counter for “minimal lettuce.” He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.

*****

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, “Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?” To which I replied, “If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?” He smiled knowingly and nodded, “That's why we ask.”

Food for thought

Here are some facts you may not know about the virulent disease.

The first clinical description of polio was provided by Michael Underwood, a British physician, in 1789.

The first outbreaks appeared in Europe in the early 1800s.

The first known outbreak in Canada was in 1910.

Polio is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus.  There are three strains of poliovirus.  Type 2 was officially declared eradicated in September of 2015 and Type 3 has not been detected since November of 2012.  It is assumed that Type 1 is the only type that remains and the cause of the few cases of polio that occur each year.

In 1916, New York experienced the first large epidemic in the United States, with more than 9,000 cases and 2,343 deaths.  Nationwide there were 27,000 cases and 6,000 deaths.

Polio mainly affects children under the age of 5.

Polio is highly contagious:  An infected person can spread the virus to other people immediately before the symptoms show up.

According to Rotary, 90 percent of all people who get infected with poliovirus will not show any visible symptoms.

People who do not show any symptoms can still infect others with the virus.

For those who do show symptoms, normally they are flu-like symptoms, like sore throat, fever, tiredness, nausea, headache, and stomach pain.

Some people infected with poliovirus will experience more severe symptoms that affect the brain and spinal cord, including paralysis and paresthesia.

Paralysis from poliovirus can lead to death because the virus affects the muscles that help us breathe.

In 1929, Philip Drinker and Louis Shaw developed the iron lung, a respirator that provided breathing support for people with paralysis of the respiratory muscles.

In 1953, the disease reached its peak in Canada.  There were almost 9,000 cases and 500 deaths.  This was the worst national epidemic since the 1918 influenza pandemic.

There is no cure for polio, but it is preventable with a vaccine.  There are two types of vaccine.  IPV, which is an injected shot, was developed by Jonas Salk and declared safe in 1955.  The other vaccine, OPV, is given orally in drop form and was developed by Albert Sabin and introduced in 1961.

In 1988, the World Health Assembly established the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.  The goal was to eradicate the disease by the year 2000.

People who seem to make a full recovery can still develop post-polio syndrome that can cause new pain, weakness, or paralysis even 15 to 40 years later.

Global Citizen campaigns to achieve the U.N.'s Global Goals, which include action for global health and well-being.  You can join us to take action against polio.  Click here.

What Can't Be Fixed

Clinical psychologist Martha Manning realizes the limits of what can be fixed. Martha told her story at the Moth Mainstage in New York City on June 5th, 2001.

The Moth’s mission is to promote the art and craft of storytelling and to honour and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.
