Shavarsh
Vladimiri Karapetyan is a retired Armenian finswimmer, best known for saving
the lives of 20 people in a 1976 incident in Yerevan.
On September 16,
1976 while jogging alongside Yerevan Lake with his brother Kamo, also
a finswimmer, Karapetyan had just completed his usual distance of 20 km
(12 mi) when he heard the sound of a crash and saw a sinking trolleybus
which had gone out of control and fallen from a dam wall. The trolley bus sank 80 feet offshore at a
depth of 33 feet.
Shavarsh
immediately dove in and swam to the bus and despite zero visibility, managed to
kick in the back window, injuring himself in the process. He proceeded to save
twenty people trapped in the bus, one at a time, for hours.
The combined
effect of the cold water and his injuries from breaking the glass window led to
his hospitalization for 45 days after the incident, during which time he
developed pneumonia, sepsis, and lung damage which ended his athletic career.
For years, his
story wasn't known, until an article about the event identified him by name in
1982. In 1985, he happened to pass by a burning building and rushed inside,
again saving people trapped inside one at a time until he collapsed. He was
again hospitalized with severe burns and lung damage.
He's still
kicking it at 66. Just an awesome person.

Canadiana
Canada's famous Klondike gold rush in the 1900s has been immortalised in a film that has been made by restored old film clips.
Many of them were in an advanced state of decay, but that did not stop the production of the film many are describing as a documentary of a forgotten time.
And our National Anthem

space experience.
-- Sharon Blaker,
E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
May 31. I was intrigued by the Sand Dams, how easy
they are to construct and how much water they will hold without losing large
amounts to evaporation.
-- David Werrett,
E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
June 3. Interesting “view” of looking at the earth
overall. Things you never really think
about.

A follow-up
For those in attendance at the most recent Thursday morning CoffeeSip on July 9, you may be interested in this update:
Cut into the
rolling hills and chalky grasslands of England, these enormous figures have
quelled unhappy troops, upset kings, and hosted pagans across the ages – and
now they greet modern-day hikers.
Here are a few:
Carved into chalk
grassland, just below the site of the Bratton Camp Iron Age hillfort in
Wiltshire, the Westbury White Horse was originally cut in the late 1600s.
Legend suggests it was created to commemorate King Alfred's victory at the
Battle of Eoandun here in 878.
Sculpted into
limestone hills north of Weymouth in 1808, the Osmington White Horse is a
depiction of King George III riding his famous steed. The figure is shown
riding out of Weymouth, suggesting he wasn’t welcome, something that aggravated
the King. So much so, he never returned.
Early suggestions
that the figure was from prehistoric or Roman times have proven fanciful, with
medieval writing making no mention of it when describing the hill. It is more
likely that it is only 400 years old, with the top layer of chalk even younger.
The giant was ‘re-chalked’ in 2008.
And don't forget to join our Thursday
morning FellowSip chats for lots of fun and education!

Program Donations
Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.
Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.
We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.
As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
