Canadiana

Canadian identity is often intertwined with its culture, history, and geography. The term "Canadiana" is used to describe elements of Canadian culture that are distinct and unique. It encompasses the stories, traditions, and artifacts that make up the fabric of Canadian society and reflect the country's heritage and values.

One of the most iconic forms of Canadiana is the Hudson's Bay Company point blanket. This woolen blanket, with its distinctive stripes, has been produced since the 1780s and is widely recognized as a symbol of Canada's fur trading history. The Hudson's Bay Company, founded in 1670, played a crucial role in the country's early development and its blankets are still popular today.

Another important aspect of Canadiana is the country's natural beauty. From the rugged coastline of the east to the soaring peaks of the Rocky Mountains in the west, Canada's landscape is truly breathtaking. This stunning scenery has inspired generations of artists, writers, and photographers, and has become a major part of Canada's national identity.

Canadian cuisine is also a part of the country's cultural heritage. From savory poutine to sweet maple syrup, Canadian food has a unique flavor and style that reflects the country's diverse geography and history. For example, Inuit cuisine, originating from northern Canada, features ingredients like whale, caribou, and seal that reflect the area's harsh climate and the need to make use of the limited resources available.

Canadiana also encompasses the country's rich literary tradition. From the works of Margaret Atwood to the poems of Al Purdy, Canadian literature is diverse and dynamic, reflecting the country's multiculturalism and its complex relationship with the land.

Finally, Canadiana includes the country's traditions and festivals, from the iconic annual winter carnival in Quebec City to the vibrant celebration of Canada Day on July 1st. These events provide opportunities for Canadians to come together, celebrate their heritage, and reflect on the country's shared values and history.

In conclusion, Canadiana is a rich and diverse tapestry of stories, artifacts, and traditions that reflect the country's unique heritage and cultural identity. From its stunning landscape to its rich literary tradition, Canadiana captures the essence of what it means to be Canadian.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

January 14. I hope lots of parents see the video about how allowing the perpetual use of cell phones by their children could affect their child's future livelihood.
January 22. The TED talk was surprising. I wonder how many people knew how that whales and other mammals store carbon dioxide their bodies. Nature never ceases to amaze, the way the entire ecosystem is so connected and keeps everything in balance until humans intrude.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Three steps to building peace and meaningful change. You can help others like this lady did through finding groups and aiding countries like Syria by funneling food etc. through neighboring countries.
-- Martin Secker, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040

January 16. Another meeting with great variety. The crow solving puzzle was amazing! Then our Speaker Ralph Chami presented at a 2022 TED talks about whales which are my favourite animal... now even more so!
January 24. Loved sheep trials and the Rotary moment, and reposted to my FB page.
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 24. Fellowship event. It is very reassuring to know that our club has a course plotted out and keeps an eye on the goals. Thank you.
-- Doug Dyer, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 21. Enjoyed the TED talk. What a Living Whale is worth.
January 27. The sheep trials. I tried to get my little Sheltie, Molly, to watch the sheep herding demonstration. I'm not sure she understood the whistle commands. And who knew that camels originated in Canada?
-- Kimberley Dominguez, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 26. Love the humour!
-- Angel Francisco Blanco Garcia, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 27. Really enjoyed the Inspirational Moment, learning about hummingbird moths, and Rotary work.
-- Brenda Race, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

January 23. “Even the sheep’s on the hills is lonely.” Lillian Beckwith.
February 1. An excellent brainiac speaker.
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Rotary minute

The Rotary Four-Way Test is a set of guiding principles that has been inspiring individuals and organizations for over 85 years. It is a simple yet powerful tool that can help us make ethical and responsible decisions in our personal and professional lives.

The Four-Way Test consists of four questions:

  • Is it the Truth?
  • Is it Fair to all concerned?
  • Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
  • Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

By asking ourselves these questions before we act or speak, we can ensure that our actions align with our values and principles. The truthfulness of our intentions is crucial in building trust and credibility with others. Fairness promotes equality and justice and helps us treat others with respect and dignity. Goodwill and better friendships foster positive relationships and a sense of community, while benefiting everyone involved.

In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing world, it is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of success and personal gain. However, the Four-Way Test reminds us that our decisions should not just benefits ourselves, but also those around us. This is what makes the test truly inspirational and relevant to all aspects of life, from personal relationships to global business practices.

By applying the Four-Way Test, we can make decisions that are not only ethical and responsible, but also in line with our values and beliefs. It helps us stay true to ourselves and others and live a life of purpose and meaning.

In conclusion, the Rotary Four-Way Test is more than just a set of questions; it is a call to action. It invites us to be accountable for our actions, to consider the impact of our decisions on others, and to strive for a better world. Whether in our personal or professional lives, let us all embrace the Four-Way Test and make a positive difference in the world.
