Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Leukemia patient.  Quite an eye opener. Missed my regular meeting today because I was building a fence. Watched this meeting with Elly.
-- Ramiro Contreras, RC of Osoyoos, District 5060

I found the Trash Video amazing. Why can't more countries use this technology? Immunization (not counting polio) remains to be a touchy (possibly controversial) subject for me, having a friend's child die as a result of it. Immunization remains to be a benefit of healthier or risk of sick children.
-- Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Founder of the Khan Academy talks about how structured video that students can watch at home to learn about math and other subjects. The students then can come back to the classroom and have the teachers individually help them with their assignments instead of using the majority of class time lecturing. This avenue can also be used as a global classroom and student piers can interact and assist in the learning and helping other students.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

Montana garden project.  The Rotary Moments are always inspirational.  Regrets that I am in a very remote location and unable to participate fully in your weekly meetings, but salute you for the content and organization of the site!  Congrats!
-- John Eberhard, Rotary Club of London, District 6330

Sal Kahn.  Sal’s program provided interesting insights on the potential for using technology to improve the educational experience.
-- Don Smith, Rotary Club of Bracebridge, District 7010

August 7.  What a great meeting!  They all are!  Thank you!
-- Janet Stead, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Inspirational Moment of the Lions Club Garden evolving into a Centre of Sustainability is very cool.  The Canadiana – First Nations Canada Flag was designed by artist Curtis Wilson of the Wei Wai Kum First Nations in Campbell River, BC, several years ago.  Jukebox of the Classic Beatles was awesome!
--Andy Adams, Rotary Club of Campbell River, District 5020

Sal Kahn.  Future  of education indeed!
--Peter Denooy, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Contribution from Club President Peter Denooy
who visited a local terra club in
San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic

President Yanira of the local Rotary Club had been to Texas with GSE and was very active for many years in the local Rotaract Club of San Juan de la Maguana. She recently organized a special meeting celebrating Father's day in the Dominican Republic.

I had the privilege, as visiting President of the Rotary E-Club of Canada One, to be invited to sit at the head table and to assist in handing out prizes to the dads who won several games.

A really fun night with a club that is trying to attract new members, as we all do.

Pictures follow - with Ileana and President Yanira.

Humour

A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly-behaved grandson. He has his hands full with the child screaming for sweets, chips, all sorts of things. The grandad is saying in a controlled voice: "Easy, William, we won't be long . . . easy boy."

Another outburst and she hears the grandad calmly say : "It's okay William. Just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there, boy."

At the checkout, the little horror is throwing items out of the shopping cart. Grandad says again in a controlled voice: "William, William, relax buddy, don't get upset. We'll be home in five minutes, stay cool William."

Very impressed, she goes outside to where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says : "It's none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying things would be okay. William is very lucky to have you as his grandad."

"Thanks," says the grandpa. "But I am William. The little imp's name is Kevin."

The old woman and the dog

An elderly woman was walking her dog one evening when a young man ran by her and grabbed her purse and took off.  A couple across the street ran over to check on her saying the police were called and would be here in a few minutes.

The woman smiles and tells the couple that it's really no big deal:  she carries her old purse to put her dog's poop in it until she gets home to dispose of it.

Imagine the surprise when the thief opens the purse.

Food for Thought

Photos and Rotary News – contributed by Angel Blanco

(Angel has been a frequent attendee at our Thursday morning FellowSips.)

Here are some photographs of my Rotarian life here in Majadahonda for your interest.

Two of them correspond to the ceremony where I was "pinned" (the swearing-in and the initiation fellowship dinner).

I have also been involved with the youth interchanges, both short and long.  The picture corresponds to my last two tutored interchanges, and the other picture is from all the interchanges we had that year.

There is one Canadian (actually two, if you count my daughter) in the group, anyone cares to guess who she is.

It was funny when everyone in the club said, “You are from  WHEEEERE?"    “Yes,  Saskatchewan!”  “Sask...what?”

Both Grace and I had a lot of fun with that.

The last photo corresponds to the last camp the Majadahonda Club hosted - a project whose 10th event we are kicking off this August 30, and my excuse for the induction meeting on Aug 10.  I will keep you updated on how it develops.

Best Rotary regards,

Angel Blanco
