Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
Moving
Windmills. William Kamkwamba saw a need
and initiated a correction by reading. This self-taught individual broadened
his own horizons, as well as many others. It is interesting what a small spark
of knowledge can lead to a huge fire for others.

Life Lessons from
the youngest person to travel to every country.
Brilliant speaker with a terrific message. Good setup!
-- Elizabeth
Gaffney, Stratford Rotary Club, District 6330
Watched Lexie
Alford’s TED talk about travelling and overcoming fear. I was able to relate to her travelling alone
as I travelled alone in Asia and Australasia for 5 months, though you soon find
you are not really alone as you usually find someone to talk to and travel
with.
-- David Werrett,
E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Access needed for
polio immunization
As of early
August, more than half or 775,000 of the 1.4 million children targeted for
polio vaccination in NSAG-controlled parts of northern Afghanistan missed out
on life-saving immunisation. Areas where vaccinations were not able to occur
included Balkh, Jawzjan, Sar-e- Pul, Faryab, and Samangan.
Polio vaccination
campaigns have been suspended in many areas, both in Non-State Armed Group
(NSAG) and Government controlled areas of the country since April 2019.
The
Government announced a nationwide immunization campaign on 5 August; however, some areas have not been reachable due to insecurity. While the South has seen
the largest number of cases, the western provinces are at particular risk of
polio infection due to population movements from the South.
The East is also at
high risk due to cross-border movements and an active polio-virus outbreak in
adjacent areas. Despite the challenges, 2.1 million people were vaccinated in
July 2019.

What is polio?
- Polio, or poliomyelitis, mainly affects children aged under five
- It is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours
- Initial symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, stiffness of the neck and pains in the limbs
- One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis. Among those paralysed, 5% to 10% die when their breathing muscles become immobilised
- Today, only two countries - Afghanistan and Pakistan - remain polio-endemic, down from more than 125 in 1988

WITHOUT A CASE OF POLIO!

Program Donations
Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.
Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.
We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.
As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
