Hometown Hero

...from the Sarnia Observer, early August, 2019

Retired astronaut, Chris Hadfield unveiled his "hometown" start from Canada's Walk of Fame during an event in Sarnia in early August.
When Chris Hadfield was flying above the Earth, he asked followers on social media what part of the planet they would like him to photograph through the windows of the International Space Station.

“The resounding word from all around the plant was, ‘I want to see a picture of my hometown,’” the retired astronaut told a crowd gathered on Sarnia’s riverfront Tuesday to celebrate his “hometown” star from Canada’s Walk of Fame.
People are proud of where they’re from, he said.
“I’ve been lucky enough not only to be born here and raised here,” but also to see “the beauty of it from space,” Hadfield said.
“This is a place that I love … and Sarnia is a place that I’m so proud to call home.”

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

As one who mostly failed in school, I could really understand the benefits of the Khan Academy teaching videos on the future of education.  How often was I forced to move to a new lesson without understanding the last!
-- Jean Michel Crepin, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Loved the Greeter message from Vicki Horsfield and the Canadiana about the aboriginal role in WW II.
-- James Ferguson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Youngest person.  Her talk about fear, loneliness and even expectations in unknown cultures is very real to all, but I certainly experienced this during my ten years in Central America, Cuba, Mexico, North Africa and Europe Across Canada and USA and in our Arctic alone. One needs to face their own realities and fears of the unknown. I call it an adventure.

I never have had a goal of seeing all the countries in the world but the travel I have completed has been driven by my curiosity of different cultures.

I really enjoyed hearing about her goals and obstacles to achieve them as we all have them in our lives.

Reaching out to overcome comfort zone limits is most satisfying once done, be it fear of death, loneliness, or the unknown to us  or psychological intimidation which is often the life real wars and fears of harm.

Thank you to Doug Dyer for this contribution and congratulations on another great online meeting!
-- Lynne Ternosky, Passport Club of Rotary District 6330

Food for Thought

Danish artist Thomas Dambo creates larger than life sculptures hidden around his hometown of Copenhagen.

His sculptures require secret poems and clues in order to locate them. He says each has its own treasure map or poem engraved into stone to steer people onto unfamiliar paths where they’ll discover them.

Rotary Jukebox

For a small donation, your favorite musician will be featured on one of our next e-meetings for everyone to enjoy.

Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured

Speaker Program

In this beautiful and moving talk, the self-proclaimed "happiest man on earth", Eddie Jaku shares his story of love and survival at TEDxSydney 2019. Eddie Jaku was a Jew living in Germany at the outbreak and throughout the duration of World War II.

His story of survival spans 12 years, from Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 until liberation in 1945. He saw death every day throughout WWII, and because he survived, he made a vow to himself to smile every day. Eddie Jaku OAM, born Abraham Jakubowicz in Germany in 1920. His family considered themselves German, first, Jewish second.

On 9 November 1938, the night immortalised as Kristallnacht, Eddie returned home from boarding school to an empty house. At dawn Nazi soldiers burst in, Eddie was beaten and taken to Buchenwald. Eddie was released and with his father escaped to Belgium and then France, but was again captured and sent to a camp, and thereafter to Auschwitz.

On route, Eddie managed to escape back to Belgium where he lived in hiding with his parents and sister. In October 1943, Eddie’s family were arrested and again sent to Auschwitz where his parents were both murdered. In 1945, Eddie was sent on a ‘death march’ but once again escaped and hid in a forest eating slugs and snails until June 1945 he was finally rescued by the U.S. army.

Eddie has volunteered at the Sydney Jewish Museum since its inception in 1992. Self-proclaimed as ‘the happiest man on earth’, he saw death every day throughout WWII, and because he managed to survive, made a vow to himself to smile every day.

Eddie has been married to Flore for 73 years.  They have two sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
