Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Greta Thunberg.  I must say that the program - Ms. Thunberg - was difficult to watch.  Sadly, I was struck not by the message, but by what she is an exemplar of - part of now the second generation to be brainwashed about the junk science notion of anthropogenic (man-made) climate change.

There is no doubt that climate changes.  It has done so for eons, in cycles that can easily be proven, and well before the internal combustion engine, or other "greenhouse gas" producing machines, were ever around. I hope we will have a program soon which involves a learned and credible climate scientist explaining the fallacy of this man-made climate change theory.
-- Delwen Stander, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Michael Junior – More than Funny.  I enjoyed the mix of themes  and knowledge in the meeting and peppy four--way theme sung by Saskatoon Rotary club. The time passed quickly for speaker Michael Junior and was enjoyable.  The interview  vignette with the Millennial  senior job interview was oh so true, and the train idea for dementia, excellent!   Wonder how we as Rotary could sponsor installation of this feature or what it would cost. Any ideas?
-- Lynne Ternosky, District 6330 Passport Club

Michael Jr.  Michael talks about life has the same components as comedy.  The setup moves the audience in one direction and toward what is expected. The punch line occurs when you change direction and take the audience to the unexpected. This same process can be applied to life.
-- Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, District 5370

May 25.  I knew that remains of camels had been found near here in the Bow Valley but did not realise their habitat extended so far north.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The humorous moment with the interview with the young Millennial girl brings us to reality.  We better get used to it!
-- Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One

Michael Jr.  More than Funny.  A great selection of a speaker program! A simple message of better to give than receive beautifully delivered.
-- Robert Boyden, RC of Canmore, District 5360

Michael Jr.  Your 'setup' are your talents, resources, and opportunities.  Your punchline is what you deliver; use your gifts to help people get to their destination.  Your setbacks are part of your setup--just like a slingshot; the larger the setback, the larger the destination.
-- Sue Coates, Lewis River Rotary, District 5100

A message from our recent Guest Winner!

Greetings from the Rotary Club of Campbell River, District 5020.

Campbell River is a small community situated on the east coast of Vancouver Island sitting on the 50th parallel.  A large granite cairn with the Rotary Wheel marks the spot on the Rotary Seawalk.

Janet Koch
Our Club was charted in 1946 and we usually fluctuate between 80 and 90 members.    Our main focus has been towards local community projects and we raise the funds through a TV Auction.  This fall will be our 45th!  The whole community gets involved and reaps the benefits as the money raised stays in the community.

Rotary Seawalk.  The Rotary Seawalk stretches over 7 kilometers of seashore, was built in sections over the years, and was partnered with the City.

Splash Park.  Another joint project.  And the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge.  The construction of the 60-meter Elk Falls Suspension Bridge situated in the Elk Falls Provincial Park was a multi-year project and a vision fulfilled.    It is spectacular!

We are an accomplished Club.  Check us out!

Rotary Connects the World!  May the year be a success for everyone.

Janet Koch, Rotarian
(Guest winner of our E-club’s $100 donation in her name to TRF!)

What is The Cadre of Technical Advisors as it applies to Rotary?

Cadre of Technical Advisers
The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers is a group of volunteer Rotarians who provide technical expertise and advice to Rotarians planning and carrying out Rotary grant projects around the world.

What we do
Cadre members review, monitor, and evaluate projects and ensure grant funds are being used properly. Our assignments include:

Technical reviews.  Cadre members evaluate the technical feasibility of a project and submit a written evaluation. Reviewers don’t travel or communicate with the project sponsors.

Site visits.  An advance site visitor evaluates the technical feasibility of a proposed project. An interim monitor reports on the implementation of an ongoing project. A post-project monitor evaluates the impact and resolution of a completed project. For these assignments, cadre members travel to the project site and meet with the project sponsors and the benefiting community.

Audits.  Auditors evaluate the financial management and oversight of grant funds. Audits can be targeted or random. Cadre members travel to the project site and meet with the project sponsors and the benefiting community.

Operational audits.  Cadre members assess the controls grant sponsors have to ensure qualification. This involves evaluating financial books, records, and documentation.

Who we are
We are experts in technical sectors that correlate to each of Rotary’s six areas of focus. In addition, our team of auditors reviews project finances and grant management. Cadre members include:

Lawyers, diplomats, teachers, social workers, mediators, arbitrators (peace and conflict prevention/resolution)

Obstetricians, doctors, nurses, midwives, public health professionals, epidemiologists (maternal and child health & disease prevention and treatment)

Civil, environmental, mechanical, and biological engineers, city planners (water and sanitation)

Teachers, community educators, education advocates, administrators (basic education and literacy)

Small-business owners, bankers, city planners, community organizers, real estate professionals, revitalization specialists, agronomists (economic and community development)

Accountants, financial advisers (auditing)

Our technical coordinators help recruit cadre members and serve as leaders in each of the technical sectors.

Rotary minute

Rotary Firsts
Rotary established the "Endowment Fund" in 1917, which became the forerunner of The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary first adopted the name "Rotary International" in 1922 when the name was changed from the International Association of Rotary Clubs.

Rotary first established the Paul Harris Fellows recognition in 1957 for contributors of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary emblem was printed on a commemorative stamp for the first time in 1931 at the time of the Vienna Convention.

The first Rotary club banner (from the Houston Space Centre) to orbit the moon was carried by astronaut Frank Borman, a member of that club.

The first Rotary International convention held outside the United States was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1921.

The first head of state to address a Rotary convention was U.S. President Warren G. Harding in 1923 at St. Louis.

Food for thought

This Teenager Knows a Secret to Slowing Guatemalan Migration

Rotarian Vicki sends this news article concerning a young girl in Guatemala.

HUEHUETENANGO, Guatemala.  When Lesly Cano Gomez was 15, she wrote out her plan to migrate to America.

"My dream is to go to the United States," she wrote, followed by three discussion sections:  "How Am I Going to Pay for It?" "Who's Going to Take Me?" and "Who's Going to Meet Me When I Get to the United States?"

There were extensive family talks about the trip, which Cano Gomez would have undertaken with her cousin, Enilda, who is four years younger than her.

"There wasn't anything here," Cano Gomez explained.  "That's why I wanted to migrate."

She knew that along the way she could be murdered or trafficked to a brothel, or else die of thirst in the desert.  "But I felt I needed to go," she added.  "The people I went to school with had migrated, a ton of them."

Yet today, four years later, Cano Gomez is still here in her village of Chichalum in the rugged Huehuetenango district.  She now has a reason to stay - and therein lies an important message for all.

Katenya Ntaiya turned her dream of getting an education into a movement to empower vulnerable girls and bring an end to harmful traditional practices in Kenya.

Meet two students at the Katenya Centre for Excellence, a school where girls can live and study safely, and uplift their community along the way.
