Canada's
newest version of its $10 bill, a vertical format note released late last year
and featuring a female civil rights activist, has won an international
competition for innovative currency.
The Canadian bill featuring
the image of Viola Desmond, a Nova Scotia businesswoman and social justice
pioneer, was awarded "Bank Note of the Year Award" for 2018 by the
International Bank Note Society.
Desmond is the first Canadian
woman to appear on that country's currency. The honor traditionally has been
restricted to British royalty, such as Queen Elizabeth II.
The back of the note
depicts the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
"Incorporating the latest in
technological standards, bold security features are easy to check and difficult
to counterfeit," said the IBNS announcement.
"The organisation considers
the artistic merit, design, use of colour, contrast, balance and security
features of each nominated bank note," the BBC reported.
Viola Desmond. Viola Irene Desmond (July 6, 1914
– February 7, 1965) was a Canadian civil rights activist and businesswoman of
Black Nova Scotian descent. In 1946 she challenged racial segregation at a
cinema in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia by refusing to leave a whites-only area of
the Roseland Theatre.

Comments from our guests and members
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
Michael
Jr. While all Ted Talks I have heard are
very informative, this one was also quite entertaining. At first, I wasn't sure
why a comedian would be delivering a Ted Talk... until I got to the punchline.
Well done!
-- Don Smith, RC of Bracebridge, District 7010
I
watched the program on the camel. I must
say that the presenter and the paleobiologist drew some very long bows on their
assumptions about the origins of the camelids. Could it be that future
discoveries and digs will turn up other clues which might lead to a difference
hypothesis? Such programs should always be prefaced with the disclaimer of
"Based on what we know to this point, this is our theory...".
Michael
Jr. I must say that this was a really unusual
program. One minute, one was laughing at his really funny jokes, and then
next minute he had one thoroughly engaged by his profound insights into the
meaning and purpose of our lives. This was truly provocative and
edifying.
-- Delwen
Stander, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Week
of June 1. I enjoyed Doug Dyer’s story
of visiting the Pamapoa Rotary Club. When visiting New Zealand in 2001 we
visited many clubs and always received a terrific welcome. Lots of fun
things in the meeting this week culminating in a wonderful Four-Way Test sing
along from the Saskatoon Nutana club.
The TED talk on How to disagree productively and find common
ground should be mandatory viewing for politicians, aspiring poilticians and
required viewing in schools to enable children to see reasonable debate can
occur not the nasty discourse on social media that has replaced debate
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One
Michael
Jr. The concept of set-up and punch line
- how it applies to more than just comedy!
-- Graham Drake, RC of Calgary Heritage Park, District 5360
How
to disagree productively and find common
ground. Listening to this speaker
I could not but help think that in today's political climate, elected
representatives of the people should be compelled to take courses in debate and
humility before assuming office instead of bringing prejudice, polarity, and an
aura of righteousness to the position.
Michael Jr. A great
selection of a speaker program! A simple message of better to give that receive
beautifully delivered.
-- Robert
Boyden, RC of Canmore, District 5360
June
10. Great online meeting and updates on
Doug's travels and the club Water project, the result of Community assessments
done - First, by the community, Subirana; second, by the Rotary Club of El
Progreso, Honduras; and finally, third by Water Missions International of
Honduras. A lot of planning but a
successful outcome.
-- Lynne
Ternosky, District 6330 Passport Club

As it begins its second
half-century, Rotaract remains as appealing as ever to young people, says Laura
Verdegaal, who, as a member of the Rotaract Club of Gooi-en Vechtstreek in the
Netherlands, participated in a panel in December via Facebook on the state of Rotaract.
Verdegaal sees Rotary and Rotaract clubs enjoying a more equal and fruitful partnership, one in which members of Rotaract collaborate in decision-making and planning, rather than serving in a subservient role. She cites a large project in her district where Rotaractors with web skills provided the main direction for the design and content of the project's website.
"If you want to serve your community on a local level, Rotaract is for you," says Verdegaal. "When you want to develop your leadership, presentation, or organization skills, or if you are into travelling and meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds, it's a great opportunity."

Food for thought
Earlier this month, a hiking trail in Brazil’s Recanto Ecológico Rio de la Prata (“Natural River Park”) flooded due to unusually heavy rains. While most outdoor sites in this situation would turn into a muddy mess, crystal clear river overflow transformed the path and its surroundings into an enchanting underwater wonderland.
As the rain poured on February 2, two nearby rivers—the Rio da Prata and the Olho D’Água—overflowed into the Recanto Ecológico Rio de la Plata’s rainforest. Waldemilson Vera, a park guide, captured mesmerizing footage of the flood as it submerged towering trees, tropical plants, and a wooden walkway in sparkling water.
