David Foster

David Foster, OC, OOC, OBC is a Canadian musician, record producer, composer, singer, songwriter and arranger born in Victoria, British Columbia. David began studying piano at age four. As the story goes, his mother was dusting the family piano, hit one of the keys, and was shocked when David correctly called out, “That’s an E!”, thus discovering he had perfect pitch. The 16-time Grammy Award winner (including three for Producer of the Year) with an unprecedented 50 Grammy nominations, a recipient of 7 Canadian Juno Awards, an Emmy Award and a three-time Oscar nominee, all over the course of four extraordinarily successful decades. David has been a producer for many successful musical artists including Bryan Adams, Christina Aguilera, Air Supply, All-4-One, The Bee Gees, Andrea Bocelli, Boz Scaggs, Toni Braxton, Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Charice, Cher, Chicago, Destiny's Child, The Corrs, Neil Diamond, Céline Dion, Earth Wind and Fire, Gloria Estefan, Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, Hall & Oates, Keith Harkin, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Katherine Jenkins, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé Knowles, Kenny Loggins, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Olivia Newton-John, Nsync, Prince, LeAnn Rimes, Kenny Rogers, Seal, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Tamia, The Tubes, Shania Twain, and Yuna. David Foster’s success in the music industry over the last four decades, has also allowed him the opportunity to give back to his community and reach out to children. Meeting with a young girl from his hometown who was awaiting a Life-saving liver transplant had a profound impact and in 1986 he established the David Foster Foundation, which was originally based in British Columbia but in 2006 became a National foundation, helping families of children needing life-saving organ transplants with their non-medical expenses. Over more than 28 years, Foster has raised millions of dollars and assisted close to 1,000 Canadian families through his foundation.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

May 20, 2019.  Fabulous presentation about the origins of the camel
-- Peter Denooy, E-Club of Canada One, D5370

Latif Nasser – You have no idea where camels come from.  Great speaker, humorous and informative.  The fact that camels come from America is really new to me.  Further, the TED Talk on the paper towel was something I will share with others.  Shake 12 times and fold three times.  Worried about watching the one on toilet paper!  😊
-- Brenda Yamkowy, District 5370

Latif Nasser.  Evolution is real, and presented in an entertaining way.  Makes it easier to understand.

Also, Angelica Dass.  Human beings should not be defined by the colour of their skin.
-- Nosberto Lou, RC of Guatemala North, District 4250

Latif Nasser.  Mr. Nasser talks about how a discovery just 10 degrees from the North Pole of a prehistoric camel bone changed how we think about camels today.  They were once of North American origin and then migrated to South America to become Llamas and Alpacas.  They so crossed the Bering Strait to migrate to Asia and then the Sahara Desert.

Their hump may have once served as a storage for food during those 24 hours of darkness and freezing temperatures.  They, however, died out during our most recent ice age from North America, but have told us a story of how this animal can adapt to the most severe climates in the world.
-- Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, District 5370

May 20 meeting.  My favourite in this meeting was the inspirational moment showing a young man helping others.
-- Ivan Docker, RC of Edmonton Strathcona, District 5370

Latif Nasser.  We have a tendency to assume what has been fed to us as accurate scientific information without stopping to ask good, probing questions.  A tibia in the Arctic helped shake up our assumed knowledge body about camels.
-- Velma Noble, RCCHP, District 5360

Latif Nasser.  I always learn something new from the TED Talks that are a feature of the online Rotary meeting and had “no idea where camels came from” until I watched this program.  It, of course, as the speaker suggested, got me thinking about the bigger picture and the transformations that have taken place through the ages.
-- Don Smith, RC of Bracebridge, District 7010

A Refugee Rescue Mission.  I liked Sasha’s story – how he found his calling through taking part in a hopeless and heart-wrenching humanitarian scenario.
-- Ruth Mitei, I am not a Rotarian

Humour
...contributed by Rotarian Elly

I changed my iPod's name to Titanic. It's syncing now.

England has no kidney bank, but it does have a Liverpool.

Haunted French pancakes give me the crepes.

This girl today said she recognized me from the Vegetarians Club, but I'd swear I've never met herbivore.

I know a guy who's addicted to drinking brake fluid, but he says he can stop any time.

The thief who stole a calendar got twelve months.

When the smog lifts in Los Angeles U.C.L.A.

I got some batteries that were given out free of charge.

A dentist and a manicurist married. They fought tooth and nail.

A will is a dead giveaway.

With her marriage, she got a new name and a dress.

Police were summoned to a daycare center where a three-year-old was
resisting a rest.

Did you hear about the fellow whose entire left side was cut off?  He's all right now.

A bicycle can't stand alone; it's just two tired.

Being a Rotarian is not OK!

OK is comfortable.

OK is status quo!

OK is not the reason we serve; it's not the reason we donate; it's not the reason we spend our time helping our community and our world.

We are not in Rotary to be comfortable.

We are here to change things.

We are here to make the world a better place for everyone.

Being a Rotarian is not OK.

Being a Rotarian is AWESOME!

Be fun, be positive, and continue to BE THE INSPIRATION

 as we

Connect the World through Rotary!
