Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

October 27. Great meeting. Especially found the inspirational story of the twins meeting after 70 years heartwarming and certainly brought tears to my eyes! And a big thank you for sharing the Food Insecurity story...together we can make a difference!
-- Brenda Race, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 29. It's been a while since I attended the Weekly Web Meeting. How emotional the video of the two twin brothers meeting after 70 years. I also really enjoyed the Aerial view of Alberta. What a beautiful diverse province. I go with Ramiro to the Thursday meeting of Chapala Rotary. This club has an enormous amount of projects on the go.
-- Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 30. The video "Alberta from Above" showed some spectacular vistas of Alberta and the Rocky Mountains. One shot was of Abbot Pass and Abbot Hut, built by guides in 1923. Unfortunately, after 99 years it succumbed to climate change as it had been built on permafrost and was in danger of falling into Lake Oesa many hundreds of metres below. So earlier this year it was dismantled by Parks Canada.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 31. Loved hearing about the Aquabox work being done. I did not know about that project, it is so important to give people clean drinking water.
-- Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 24 and 31. Excellent as always. And What do you want to be? Again, an excellent speaker.
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

October 31. I was diagnosed with ADHD, so I'm familiar with how it manifests. It is fascinating that ADHD manifests differently in males and females. I am also interested in the food security committee. Food banks are a necessary stop-gap measure. There is a lot business owners can do to help people stand on their own. My belief is that everyone outside the Amish community can benefit from understanding how they promote and support independence.
-- Conrad Hall. I am not yet a Rotarian.

Food insecurity for thought

I run a food bank. We’ve seen a 60 per cent increase in demand.

Clients are telling us they're considering medically assisted death or suicide because they can’t live in grinding poverty anymore.”

I’ve been working at the Mississauga Food Bank for 13 years. I started as the director of marketing and fund development, and I’m now coming up on five years as CEO. Our work has never been more urgent than it is right now. We’ve seen a 60 per cent increase in demand since the pandemic began. In the past, we were growing proactively, expanding our services to serve more people and reaching out to those living in poverty who didn’t know a food bank was available to support them. That’s very different from how we’ve had to adjust recently.

Throughout the pandemic, the need for food banks steadily increased. We used to serve about 19,000 people per year—now it’s more than 30,000. In October, we had the highest demand on record with more than 11,000 visitors to one of the food banks in our network.

Over the past 12 months, as food prices rose, every month has been a record-breaking one. On average, we’ve seen a 30 per cent increase in new food bank users during the pandemic. Everyday people access our services: about 75 per cent of people who use the food bank have a source of income, whether that’s through employment, social assistance or disability benefits. And this is the first time we’ve had a significant number of people tell us that it’s the cost of food, specifically, that has put them over the edge.

A parent of five children who comes to our food bank told us that even when they do have money to shop for their own groceries, they end up leaving half the cart behind because things are too expensive. The weight of bills combined with rising grocery prices is crushing. Like many people living in poverty, this family is stuck in a loop: either they earn enough money to disqualify them for any support when they still need it, or they don’t make enough to cover basic expenses.

Rotary Jukebox

For a small donation, your favorite musician will be featured on one of our next e-meetings for everyone to enjoy.

Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured
!

THIS WEEK - Submission from Doug Dyer

I added my own verse:

This song has such a soothing melody
Its golden notes flow over me.
It draws up sweet,  lifelong memories
Just like honey, baby, from the bee.
