Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

May 15. The Inspirational moment this week was entitled Plant These (depicting flowers and herbs) to Save the Bees. Yesterday I attended the 5360 District Conference and the theme of the conference was the environment. One of the speakers was a local rancher who is practising sustainable ranching without the use of pesticides and fertilisers. His beef cattle roam on meadows grazing on native grasses and flowers just as bison did for thousands of years. The surprise for me, and probably many in the audience, was his statement that the European bees, the ones kept in hives to produce honey, do not take nectar from and pollinate native flowers, only the native North American bees pollinate wild flowers and so they are absolutely necessary to preserve the native flowers. So the rancher is doing his part to Save the Bees.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

May 16. Every part of this week's meeting was fantastic, fun, inspiring and informative. Who gets to have Bill Gates as their speaker! and learn about the future of elephants as well as read the inspiring story about Iryna Bushmina. Thanks for another great meeting!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

We can make COVID-19 the last pandemic. I did not know that Bill Gates and his foundation are a part of the Response and Mobilization (GERM) team that would detect potential outbreaks and stop them from becoming pandemics. Interesting discussion regarding how we will be able to save trillions of dollars if and when the next pandemic strikes. COVID has cost approximately 14 Trillion dollars to date.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

May 18. Excellent material as usual. Love the theme song for RCM in India.
-- Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

What Are Mason Bees?

Mason bees are beautiful, gentle native bees that are also excellent pollinators.

Before honeybees were brought over from Europe; native bees, like mason bees, did all the pollinating here in North America. Mason bees do not produce honey – they collect pollen; whereas honeybees collect nectar.

A mason bee’s whole body is hairy and collects pollen, when they land on a flower they splash and pollinate better. Additionally, they’re actively looking for pollen, making them 3x better pollinators than honeybees.

Another key difference from honeybees is the mason bee doesn’t live together in a hive, instead living solitary. They’re a bee that’s active early in the season and pollinates throughout the spring.

Here’s what happened last fall in
Grand Prairie, Alberta

Canada

In recent years, Rotary clubs in Grande Prairie, Alberta, have teamed with Rotaractors in semiannual collection drives that have netted basic clothing items for the needy.

In late October, the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie joined with fellow Grande Prairie clubs — Swan City, Sunrise, and After Five — and the Rotaract Club of Grande Prairie to recruit a local junior league ice hockey team for a “Tighty-Whitey Toss”: Fans showered the rink with new packages of socks and underwear to celebrate the Grande Prairie Storm’s first goal just a few minutes into a game against the Blackfalds Bulldogs.

Local institutions serving homeless people distributed the articles a few days later. “We collected over 160 gallons of socks and underwear from this event alone,” among the 12,000 pieces taken in during the month, says Carrie Sandboe, a member of the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie. “They are the most-needed staple clothing but are the least-donated items to centers."
