Inspirational moment

“One day a terrible fire broke out in a forest – a huge woodlands was suddenly engulfed by a raging wildfire. Frightened, all the animals fled their homes and ran out of the forest. As they came to the edge of a stream they stopped to watch the fire and they were feeling very discouraged and powerless. They were all bemoaning the destruction of their homes. Every one of them thought there was nothing they could do about the fire, except for one little hummingbird.

This particular hummingbird decided it would do something. It swooped into the stream and picked up a few drops of water and went into the forest and put them on the fire. Then it went back to the stream and did it again, and it kept going back, again and again and again. All the other animals watched in disbelief; some tried to discourage the hummingbird with comments like, “Don’t bother, it is too much, you are too little, your wings will burn, your beak is too tiny, it’s only a drop, you can’t put out this fire.”

And as the animals stood around disparaging the little bird’s efforts, the bird noticed how hopeless and forlorn they looked. Then one of the animals shouted out and challenged the hummingbird in a mocking voice, “What do you think you are doing?” And the hummingbird, without wasting time or losing a beat, looked back and said, “I am doing what I can.”

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Wonderful History lesson. A visit to the Black Loyalist Heritage Center in South West Nova Scotia is a must. https://blackloyalist.novascotia.ca/
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

September 14. Slavery: Abolished on paper but more people enslaved around the world than ever before in history!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

September 14. I shared "What is the value of your Life" video clip. This was a wise mother, and the advice is timeless. Also loved the music from Elly's nephew, Igor. As usual everything in the meeting was informative and interesting. Great job!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

September 13. Very inspirational video Value of Life, and I loved the information about the underground railway.
-- Nance Macleod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Rotary, COVID, Public Health. Wow! What a well-organized Rotary meeting with brief knowledgeable folks setting out the Rotary Organization and Public Health Partners conquering disease. I think many of us have met those who refuse to vaccinate for many fearful reasons. Maybe this video might add missing information needed by someone. I learned the non-profit organization cost benefit of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio for example.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

Low Attendance problem solved
A poem by Elly Contreras, 2013

Attendance is dropping in clubs all around.
Life just got too busy for many, we found.
For those who love Rotary but cannot attend,
there is a solution to bring absence to an end.

Mom enjoys Rotary but cannot be there,
‘cause the kids need a sitter, it just isn’t fair.
Your elderly friend cannot come the club,
even though you offered picking her up.

The time of the day not convenient for you,
‘cause of that well-paying job you need to go to?
And what about snowbirds who leave for the south.
They miss meetings all winter and may be kicked out.

You feel disconnected and cannot be part
of most of the projects you enjoyed from the start.
Are all these dilemmas making you sick?
Fret no longer my friend, it’s solved with a CLICK

With a wi-fi connection on any device,
you can always attend Rotary, now isn't that nice?
Attend a meeting without leaving the house.
More time together for you and your spouse

Like hands-on involvement? That’s possible too;
Together with the club that is nearest to you.
So why not join E-club and stay involved
It’s how the problem of low attendance is solved.

AREA of Focus: DISEASE PREVENTION

The Rotary Action Group on Mental Health Initiatives (RAGMHI) promotes mental health and wellness.

Its members address the number one cause of disability worldwide - mental illness - through practical activities and club service toolkits that any member can introduce. As a result, communities improve access to treatment, confirm that mental illnesses are treatable, and learn that many cases are preventable.

Rotary’s theme for December is Disease Prevention and Treatment.
