Her friends call her a fantastic human. By any measure, Sarnia’s Kristi Disper is exceptional.
She is the reason 20 local families learned what a whole lot of kindness feels like this year.
It’s been seven months since Kristi launched a Sarnia chapter of The Fresh Start Project, a Canadian non-profit helping people transition out of shelters into their own homes.
Clients are often abused women and their children, young adults from youth shelters, and sometimes new Canadians getting re-established.
“We are told about them by support workers and go into action to fill their cupboards, their drawers and their shelves,” said Kristi. She finds out what basic household and personal items are needed, then sets up a registry on a Facebook page called The Fresh Start Project: Sarnia Area.

To date, 1,300 local residents have joined the group so that they can respond whenever Kristi puts out a call for gently used donated goods. Requests range from silverware to bed sheets and from towels to kitchen utensils. Fresh Start has provided items as small as shower curtains and as big as laptops.
“We are giving them the gift of creating a home,” Kristi said. “Fresh Start is very community driven and very gratifying.
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
Meeting on November 16 was amazing. The police and the criminal. Personal stories are so powerful and can be life-changing. Also enjoyed the fashion from mushrooms, as fashion is something I try not to fall into, and I buy used and recycled where possible. Too much waste and pleased to watch the video on recycling fabric. Let's have more of this. -- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
November 16. Excellent video on police relations. It's a view of the world that most people never see. Perhaps that's a good thing. -- Jim Kenyon, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
November 20. Ice tennis! Love it! -- Jim Ferguson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
November 20. Some inspiring videos on this week's meeting. The village in Italy that is taking used clothing and processing back to wool fibres that are then rewoven and used to make new clothing demonstrates that there are ways for a business to be prosperous in recycling clothing. The TED talk with the cop and ex-criminal showed that restorative justice can have a successful result. -- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Climate Change and Seaweed. It is good to laugh and I really enjoyed this week’s humour about the train ticket savings. -- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport
