Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

July 10. The campaign to electrify transportation and have all vehicles sold in Europe electric powered by 2035 is admirable. But will they have enough electricity? Unfortunately, the Green Party in Germany convinced Angela Merkel to shut down all the nuclear power stations and now they are desperate for power and have to buy electricity from the French nuclear power stations. And in Canada, the Government is also pushing a similar plan. At present, there are about 15,000 charging stations in the country and the estimate is that 400,000 thousand charge points will be required by 2035 at a cost of over $100,000 per station plus the requirement for increased electricity generation the costs of which no politician seems eager to address.
July 15. The Food for Thought was very interesting. I have never played the violin but the description by Inmo Yang of the different sounds, even playing the same note, that he could get from his Stradivarius was quite fascinating.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 12. Downstairs neighbours: It's heartbreaking when you want to 'fix' things for people but they are stuck in their bad situation.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One District 5370

July 16. Enjoyed the meeting, The little boy's creation of the Buddy Bench was inspiring. I was curious of the results and found this: "One (Canadian) study of students in grades one through six found that introducing a buddy bench onto the playground led to a more social recess time. Between 19% and 24% fewer students were engaged in solitary recess behavior once the buddy bench was installed." Well done by the young inventor and peace promoter!
-- Brenda Race, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 17. Hannah Gadsby. Again, wonderful speaker.
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 17. Hannah Gadsby’s TED Talk really made me think, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 19. Great meeting! I especially like the new member video this week.
-- Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

A literacy message from President Sharon

I have attached a photo below of a Little FREE Library that a friend of mine built with mostly donated items and is now on display in our front garden in Chilliwack.

I am a volunteer with Chilliwack Learning Society and they will provide me with books if necessary. I am very excited as I have wanted to have a Little Library in our area for a few years now. You just need to find the right partners!

We need to promote ourselves!

LET'S SHARE WHAT WE DO IN AND FOR OUR COMMUNITIES!

And in Sarnia, Rotary Club of Sarnia has become involved in a similar project with Rotary in partnership with Literacy Lambton.

Last week, one of the six “little free libraries” they’ve worked on was unveiled in a local park – Marcin Park. Other local parks will also receive these "little free libraries" in the coming weeks.

Rotarians built and painted the structures and, with the City of Sarnia, were able to choose the most accessible parks for the presentation.

It was a formal “unveiling.”

Well made, and with luck, to be well read.

And the Rotary name and identification clearly visible.

Rotary Jukebox

For a small donation, your favorite musician will be featured on one of our next e-meetings for everyone to enjoy.

Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured

THIS WEEK - Clean Bandit

Contributed by Jim Kenyon, who writes, “One of my favourite examples of ‘Don’t believe what you think you see…. You’re probably wrong!’

Here’s a wonderful example of Clean Bandit singing their song Rockabye which sat on the Charts for over a year and a half. The blonde singer is so cute and looks like she’s so quiet and loveable. Anne Marie, the singer, is actually Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson. She’s also three-time WORLD Karate Champion. Bet you didn’t see that one coming…”

Speaker Program

PBS News Hour shared by Rotarian Irene Makar

Because of the length of this presentation, we hope everyone will have the time to view the entire video this week (or later) and find/learn something new and worthwhile through the message.

PBS NewsHour’s next hour-long special Searching for Justice: Life after Lockup focuses on the many challenges individuals face after incarceration -- from reconnecting with family, to finding work and housing, to staying out of prison or jail.

The special follows four formerly incarcerated individuals and highlights their struggles and successes as they return to society.

Michael Plummer, of Washington, D.C., was locked up at age 17 for murder. Through a Washington program for juveniles sentenced to life, he was given a second chance and released after 23 years. Plummer has now found a path through peer mentoring and has dedicated himself to being an example to others.

Early in 2020, Rachel Schuyler was arrested for two counts of forgery -- crimes she’d committed years earlier. She pleaded guilty, was released, and she says for the first time, was ready to get her life on track. But every day has been a struggle.

Michael Cevallos has been in and out of prison for 28 years for burglary, narcotics charges, and parole violations. After his release in 2020, Cevallos decided he wasn’t ready for reentry, so he built a cell in his sister’s garage. From there he’s hosted a nightly Facebook live event called “Cell Life” to try to create a support group and keep himself accountable.

After years of addiction and incarceration, Renee Wyatt was able to turn her life around in the 1990s. Now, as a social worker, she helps other formerly incarcerated women succeed on the outside.

This program is an exceptional one and is being included thanks to Irene. The length of time for the main program in this weekly meeting has been extended because of the quality of the program and the topic.

Thank you, Irene!

Program Donations

Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.

Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.

We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.

As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
