Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Wang Ping – Book War. It was inspiring to hear the lengths she and others went through to read books, despite exile and punishment, and then to keep storytelling alive with or without books. It was inspiring to hear her story and her life achievements.
-- Brenda Race, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

April 12. Wang Ping. What a brave and heartwarming story told by Wang Ping. The humour section always tickles my funny bone!
--
Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

April 16. Wang Ping. I cannot imagine not being able to read any book of your choice. Wonderful speaker this week.
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

April 17. Wang Ping. Wang Ping's story about growing up during the Chinese cultural revolution of Mao Zedong was both sad and full of admiration for her determination to read and be educated in spite of the Red Guards cultural revolution.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Warren Dahlin. A touching story of the personal connection between a medical professional, patient, and the patient after death. Warren provides a lesson that it is okay to care about patients.
-- Michael Thomas, Rotary Club of Stony Plain, District 5370

April 18. Warren Dahlin. When I entered UBC to study physiotherapy, I remember on my first day of anatomy lab thinking, “What if I see someone I know?!” After watching our speaker program, I would have a different attitude. What a delightful fellow. Amazing rendition of Hallelujah.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Announcements

Looking ahead in District 5370

District Governor for 2022-23 – John Nicoll

John Nicoll hails from Rotary Club Edmonton Northeast and has been an active member of our District and his Club. John has been an Area Governor for District 5370 and a Past President of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Northeast. He has volunteered for numerous committee assignments and supported many local projects with hands-on work and fund-raising.

One of his favourites is the work his club does with Abbott School, a challenged school in east Edmonton. Through his connection with a previous music teacher, he learned of a need for a small grant to provide do-it-yourself flute kits for the grades five and six students. This has grown into an annual flute-building event.

Humour

Prison is just one word to you, but for some people, it’s a whole sentence.

Scientists got together to study the effects of alcohol on a person’s walk, and the result was staggering.

I’m trying to organize a hide-and-seek tournament, but good players are really hard to find.

I got over my addiction to chocolate, marshmallows, and nuts. I won’t lie, it was a rocky road.

What do you say to comfort a friend who’s struggling with grammar? There, their, they’re.

I went to the toy store and asked the assistant where the Schwarzenegger dolls are and he replied, “Aisle B, back.”

What did the surgeon say to the patient who insisted on closing up their own incision? Suture self.

I’ve started telling everyone about the benefits of eating dried grapes. It’s all about raisin awareness.

New members' corner

One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy.

This 24-word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy.

Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways.

All Rotarians should commit these four guidelines to memory!

Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.

We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.
