August 23. Judges. Great topic. Having just finished the book, "Just Mercy," which profiles the power and corruption of racist judges in the southern US, and the disproportionate number of blacks and poor people in prisons, it is definitely time for judges to have to receive some kind of training, and more importantly, be accountable from someone higher up. A must-read book.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Environment/ Who makes the judges. Both speakers were very informative, but the best one was who makes the judges. This speaker was excellent and informative.
-- Martin Secker, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040
August 27. Afroz Shah and the beach cleanup. It is amazing what can happen when one person is motivated to do something as Afroz did to get hundreds of people onto a beach in India to do a major cleanup.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
I love Mathematics. I enjoyed the start of the meeting when they explained Fellowships in Rotary. It’s an area of Rotary I am aware of, but this message will spur me to looking into them.
I love mathematics was the program today. The speaker Eddie Wood was clear and concise. Nice to listen to, and a most enjoyable subject.
-- Larry Reynolds, Rotary Club of Campbell River Luncheon, District 5020
Thrive by Five. I loved the update from Guatemala. Great work, Vicki and Rotarians!
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport
August 30. Loved all of the meeting, especially the inspiring story of Mary Ellis. She was a true hero to all women.
-- Nance Macleod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The organizations – Kiwanis International, Lions Clubs International, Optimist International, and Rotary International – have collaborated during the past 18 months to share ideas on future collaborations. This first public effort encourages clubs to reach out to one another to work together on projects that improve and benefit local communities.
“All of our organizations serve our communities to change lives. We must ensure that our various clubs identify a local need and work together to provide the service to fulfill that need,” said Shekhar Mehta, President, Rotary International.
“We have so many common goals and objectives,” said Peter Mancuso, 2021-22 Kiwanis International president. “The Celebrate Community initiative is one way to join together to work on a project that will have a measurable impact on communities around the world.”
“We can help the world recover in this time of need when many are still struggling,” said Douglas X. Alexander, International President for Lions Clubs International. “If we let our passion for service shine through, there is absolutely nothing we can’t accomplish together.”
Patsy Garner, 2021-2022 Optimist International President, supports the effort to encourage all service clubs working together to help their communities. “Now, more than ever, collaboration is needed. Resources can be scarce and a joint effort could make a far greater impact in our communities than a single act."

Very docile and gentle, Galapagos penguins are unique. They are not only one of the smallest penguin species in the world, but also they are also the only penguin that lives in the equatorial line with a tropical climate. They feed near the coast and their diet is mainly composed of fish and crustaceans. They are excellent divers as they dive to find prey at deeper levels. They have been recorded feeding at 50 meters deep.
This is happening due to global climate change and it is one of the main threats to the penguin’s survival.

Running a successful Rotary club is a bit like baking a cake. You need the right ingredients.
If you’re a baker, you know that a great cake is made up of individual ingredients that come together to produce something special. A great Rotary club is like that, in that it is made up of a unique mix of ingredients.
1. A unique club identity
2. Engaging club meetings
3. A robust, member-driven service program
4. A desire to socialize with others
5. Strong leadership

"Wherever you woke up this morning, chances are good it was in a building made at least partly out of sand. Even if the walls are made of brick or wood, the foundation is most likely concrete. Maybe it's also plastered with stucco, which is mostly sand. The paint on your walls likely contains finely ground silica sand to make it more durable, and may include other forms of high-purity sands to increase its brightness, oil absorption, and color consistency.
Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured!
