Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Revolutionizing Dementia Care.  What a wonderful idea. It seems like common sense to me. I was struck by the statistics of how common this is.
-- Larry Reynolds, RC of Campbell River Lunch, District 5020

Dr. David Sheard's interview on the 'butterfly home' concept for dementia sufferers is definitely the way to move forward.
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Revolutionizing Dementia Care.  Dr. David Sheppard discusses the Butterfly Method for Dementia care which involves reaching the persons spirit inside instead of taking a generic approach of one size fits all.

The language of dementia is about reaching the inner feelings that these people have. A 92-year-old person can still ask for their mom because they are afraid alone and do not know why they are there. A common answer would be “Your mother is not alive.”   The Butterfly answer would be" “I understand your mother was a very caring kind person who loved you very much."

Those institutions who incorporate the Butterfly method usually have to go through huge staffing changes because many who work there are unwilling to give up the institution approach and not wanting to add color to their own lives, such as the way they dress.
-- Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Point, District 5370

Where do I get a Linemen calendar? Dementia is an ugly thing. We need to learn more about it.
-- Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

I learned a lot about dementia from Steve Palkin's interview with Dr David Shear.  We have a (Rotarian) friend whose wife has had dementia for a number of years so the subject is especially relevant.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

FELLOWSHIP ASSEMBLY 2020-01-21
“TRIBUTE TO PETER DENOOY” AND
“A LITTLE BIT OF SERVICE”

What a great evening of fellowship and remembrance with the twelve people who joined us on Zoom at 1800 hrs MST.    Attendees included RECCO members in Alberta, British Columbia, Mexico. Costa Rico, and Anguilla along with guests from Florida and Guatemala.   Thank you DG Tracy Vavrek for joining us; it was most appreciated.

It was great to meet “face to face” and pay tribute to President Peter who passed away 2020-01-09.   As one member said “Peter will be remembered and not forgotten – and hard to replace.”    When asked to describe Peter in one word, the following responses were given by those in attendance:

“Direct – Dedicated – Passionate – Amazing – Knowledgeable – Inspiring Leader – Quick Witted – Great Sense of Humor – Visionary – Zoom-Master - a Man with Integrity.”

David Werrett has accepted the President’s position for the remainder of the Rotary Year 2019-20.  He and Sharon attended Peter’s funeral in Edmonton and had an opportunity to meet with the family at the reception following the service.

Sharon gave a great presentation on “A Little Bit of Service” with pictures and comments of RECCO members who did service in their own communities over the holiday season.    This initiative by the Membership Committee demonstrates that even E-Clubs can participate in community service, just not all in the same place.   Where there’s a will, there’s a way – go TEAM RECCO!

This Fellowship Assembly will be available on YouTube simply by searching Rotary E-Club of Canada One.    Please join us for the February 2020 event when we will celebrate our  7-year anniversary.   The Zoom links can be found on our RECCO home page.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Rotary minute

The “Why” of Rotary is different for each member and for each it is deeply personal. Life takes us in many different directions so when we each choose a volunteer organization to spend our free time with, we know that it means a great deal to us on some level.

For Mike L, it is a way to give back to the community that showed him so much support during his late wife’s illness. He chose Rotary because “it is wonderfully simple and produces results.”

For Pat C, it is a place where no idea is too small and we embrace all things that allow us to come together as a Club for the benefit of our community.

For Derek C, it is a way to carry on his family’s tradition of giving back to the community.

For Greg S, it is choosing to accept the responsibility of joining a team of like-minded people whose main purpose is “to help promote awareness of the dignity of all people”. His personal membership challenge is to continue to contribute using the people in this room as mentors and he likes his chances!

For Janet C, it is recognizing that she found a place where the more she gives the more she wants to give.

For Brenda A, it is being part of a group of great men and women who help her give back to the community she has spent so much time in.

For each of us, as a Rotarian, it is living the motto “service above self” – it just happens to be a lot of fun at the same time!

Food for thought

Today's speaker (food for thought) is from The Moth.  It is an audio file only.  I hope you will enjoy it.  An experimental feature for the posted meeting.

It's an interesting viewpoint and an interesting speaker.

The Moth's mission is to promote the art and craft of storytelling and to honour and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.

Instructions:
  1. Right-click this link.   (https://themoth.org/stories/war
  2. Choose "Open in a new tab" to get started.
  3. On the Moth screen, scroll down, find and click "Listen Now."

Then you will be able to return to this meeting "tab" to continue the meeting.

*What is The Moth?

It is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling.  Founded in 1997, the organization presents a wide range of theme-based story-telling events across the U.S. and abroad, often featuring prominent literary and cultural personalities.

The Moth's mission is to promote the art and craft of storytelling and to honour and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience.

Storytelling rules:  Moth stories are told, not read.  We love how the storyteller connects with the audience when there is no page between them.  Please know your story "by heart," but not by rote memorization.  No notes, paper, or cheat sheets allowed on stage.
