Inspirational moment

Benjamin Giroux, a 10-year-old from Plattsburgh, New York, has Asperger’s disorder – a type of chemical imbalance. He was given a school task where he was approached to compose a lyric titled “I Am.”

He class was given the initial two words in each sentence. From that point, the remainder of the lyric was up to him.

But while he might not be one to express much emotion, Benjamin was excited for his latest assignment. He sat at the family kitchen table and didn’t look up until he was finished.

When he showed the poem to his parents and his teacher, they were overwhelmed with emotion.

Read Benjamin’s poem below:

Benjamin

The full poem is below:
Since Benjamin wrote the poem, it has gone viral and even the National Autism Association highlighted and shared it with others.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Quite a moving tribute for Peter who was a leader in so many Rotary Efforts. Tears came to my eyes when I realized his last morning with the E-Club online meeting. How very moving and a real example of how he valued Rotary and his friends in Rotary worldwide and online.

My heart goes out to his family and Illeana in particular so far away from her family in the Dominican and yet so little time here to grieve his loss.

Thank you to all who contributed to this wonderful Tribute to Peter's Rotarian life.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport

Wonderful to see all the nice words written in honour of Peter. Perhaps we should start a trend to write nice, praising things about our members while they can still read them for themselves.
-- Elly Contreras, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Having been a friend of Peter, I was pleased to see what impact he left on others.
-- Harald Kuckertz, Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona, District 5370

What a terrific tribute to Peter. And what a lesson to enjoy those you want to, while you can.
-- Janet Stead, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Very nicely put together.  Very moving.
-- Jim Kenyon, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

As a Rotarian & psychotherapist in active private practice, I salute your excellent program today in honour of your recently departed President. Job well done to pay tribute to a life well lived.
-- Velma Noble, RCCHP, District 5360

Very thoughtful assembly of thoughts, pictures and tributes. A great capture of the man who was such an exemplary Rotarian and promoter of the eClub model.
-- Marilyn Mucha, Rotary Club of Edmonton Whyte Avenue, District 5370

Thank you very much for this very fitting tribute to our dear friend Peter. May he rest in peace.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Rotary International President-elect Holger Knaack is encouraging Rotarians to seize the many opportunities Rotary offers to enrich their lives and the communities they serve.

Knaack, a member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, revealed the 2020-21 presidential theme, Rotary Opens Opportunities, to incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, on 20 January.

Rotary isn’t just a club for people to join, but rather “an invitation to endless opportunities,” said Knaack, who becomes president on 1 July. He emphasized that Rotary creates pathways for members to improve their lives and the lives of those they help through service projects.

Rotary minute
Tamara Abu Sham
This was my third visit to Kandahar in southern Afghanistan known as the ‘polio virus engine’. It was a hot humid day with temperature around 40 degrees. About 10-minute drive from the city center, the car turned into a narrow dusty road. I stepped out of the car together with female social mobilisers that accompanied me in the polio campaign monitoring trip. We were received by a pleasant elderly woman standing in-front of a mud house with a warm smile.
She welcomed us into her home and offered us ‘Shaie Sabz’, green tea that no Afghan family will run out of it. After the traditional greetings and best wishes we explained the purpose of our visit, what is polio, why the repeated immunization, the benefits of vaccination and that vaccines were free, available and that vaccines work. She told us ‘’in the past we didn’t know much about the importance of vaccine, now health workers, TV and radio programs discuss a lot about the danger of polio. I want my grandchildren to be all healthy, so please vaccinate all of them’’. So, we were able to vaccinate 10 children under five-years old.

In the 5th installment of Steinway's “Live from the Factory Floor” concert series, The 5 Browns visited the historic Steinway factory in Astoria, NY to perform in front of the 350+ craftspeople that work on building the world's best pianos.

The 5 Browns – Ryan, Melody, Gregory, Deondra and Desirae – all attended New York’s Juilliard School. In fact, they became the first family of five siblings ever accepted simultaneously. The 5 Browns tour extensively and have performed in numerous venues including the Grand National Theater in China, Suntory Hall in Japan and, in the United States, The Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Symphony Hall in Chicago and Alice Tully Hall in New York City. In this clip, from the group's visit to the New York factory on October 2, 2015, they played their unique 5 piano version of "Rhapsody in Blue" by Steinway Artist Immortal George Gershwin.
