Inventor of Biosand Filter Recognized

Dr. David Manz developed the household biosand filter in the 1990s at the University of Calgary in Canada.

In October 2018, Dr. Manz was recognized by the Province of Alberta, Canada with the Alberta Order of Excellence, for his work on bringing this efficient and affordable clean water solution to thousands.

It is estimated that over 650,000 biosand filters are being used in over 55 countries. The installation of many of these filters was through Rotary projects using District and Global Grants.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

Thanks for the TED talk on the need for children to be vaccinated and the current outbreak of measles due to the parents not having their children vaccinated.  It is so unfortunate that these people have been totally misled by the anti-vaxxers spreading the fable that the vaccination causes autism.
-- David Werrett, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

This is a very engaging and important topic. While the trolley problem has always been an interesting exercise in ethics, it has never really been one which demands an actual solution in the real world.

With the advent of driverless cars, programmed by third parties to perform certain tasks in certain situations, this problem is now very real.  It would behoove all responsible citizens to think carefully about the consequences of allowing such pre-programmed vehicles on the road in the absence of a serious debate about how we will expect them to "behave."
-- Delwen Stander, Rotary E-Club of Canada One, D-5370

Lyad provides information about the work that is involved in collecting data for decisions to be made by driverless vehicles. He uses the example of does a car choose to go straight through a crowd, swerve to hit only one pedestrian, or crash into a wall to miss everyone and possibly kill the passenger. These are all based on studies of making moral decisions and how it now becomes the dilemma with driverless vehicles. It is an ongoing process that still requires considerable work.
-- Michael Thomas, RC of Stony Plain, Alberta, D-5370

Measles Talk TED Talk
I watched most videos of this programme, inspirational moment, and the Change of a Dollar video. All were very well made and thought-provoking.
-- Karl Wahl, RC of Thunder Bay, D-5580

The theremin is distinguished among musical instruments in that it is played without physical contact. The thereminist stands in front of the instrument and moves his or her hands in the proximity of two metal antennas. (Wikipedia)

Program Donations

Our E-Club is a dynamic club comprised of ordinary working and retired people who acknowledge that Rotarians are people who are generous with their time and their resources.

Our club and the program you have just enjoyed, either as a member or a visitor, is funded only by donations.

We are developing ideas for fundraising with our members who are scattered across Canada, USA, Central America, and Europe, but we do need your help.

As you have not had to buy lunch or travel to attend this program, please make a donation of a minimum of $10.00, considering you're saving in time and cost in appreciation for the experience you have enjoyed.
