From DG Ramesh Ferris
September 27, 2025 –
September 27, 1982 – 43 years ago on the 27th I arrived in Canada after being adopted to a family in Whitehorse, Yukon.
The Government of Canada initially denied me access to Canada stating I would cause excessive demand on health and social services.
After political pressure from the CBC in the Yukon and other media outlets across Canada. This decision was overturned by then Canadian Federal Immigration Minister Lloyd Axworthy, which allowed me to enter Canada on a Ministerial Permit.
And now, 43 years later, I'm in New York City meeting with world leaders as part of the United Nations General Assembly week and urging continued support of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
In 2008 when I hand-cycled across Canada, I had an opportunity to meet Lloyd Axworthy and personally thank him for his decision to allow me into Canada.
It's amazing how the journey unfolds and where it will take us!

We appreciate donations made by our generous visiting Rotarians!
The Rotary E-club of Canada One appreciates donations made by visiting Rotarians and guests when they attend our meeting.
In recognition of the support given to our Club by these visitors, the Club makes a quarterly donation of $100 to the Rotary Foundation.

October: Economic and Community Development Month
Welcome to Rotary! As a new member, you’ll soon discover that each month highlights one of Rotary’s areas of focus. October shines a spotlight on Economic and Community Development — a cornerstone of Rotary’s work around the world.
This month, we reflect on how Rotary empowers communities to break the cycle of poverty. Through microloans, vocational training, job creation, and support for entrepreneurs — especially women — Rotary helps build stronger, more resilient local economies. Whether it's revitalizing a village market in rural Kenya or supporting job-skills training right here at home, Rotarians are making a real difference.
One powerful way our club supports this effort is through Kiva.org, a global nonprofit that connects lenders to entrepreneurs in underserved communities. With as little as $25, we help individuals around the world start or grow small businesses, support their families, and lift up their communities. These loans are often repaid and re-loaned — creating a ripple effect of opportunity.
As a new Rotarian, this is a perfect time to explore how your passions and skills can contribute to uplifting communities, both near and far.
You’re not just joining a club —
you’re joining a global force for good.

Rotary minute
The Power of the Pin
A Rotarian was rushing through an airport on the way to a business meeting, wearing her Rotary pin as always. As she waited in line at the coffee shop, the man behind her tapped her on the shoulder and said, “Rotarian?”
She smiled and nodded, and he said, “I’m a Rotarian too—Club of Atlanta. You look like you’re in a hurry—can I buy your coffee?” They started chatting, and in just a few minutes, they discovered shared interests in youth exchange and water projects.
That one small pin sparked a connection that later turned into a club partnership and a successful international grant.
Never underestimate the quiet power of that little wheel—it’s not just a pin. It’s a passport to friendship, opportunity, and service.
And here’s an idea!
Wear your Rotary pin and tell us what happens!
It could make some ideal conversation on a Thursday morning especially if we can couple that with a random act of kindness!
