Inspirational moment

Blossom with Purpose

As flowers bloom in May, let us be inspired to grow and blossom in our purpose. Just as each petal contributes to the beauty of the whole, every act of kindness, every gesture of goodwill, and every commitment to service makes a difference.

In this season of renewal, may we be reminded that our actions today plant the seeds for a better tomorrow.

New Beginnings, New Opportunities

May is a time of new beginnings and vibrant growth. It reminds us that no matter the challenges we've faced, each new day brings fresh opportunities to make a positive impact.

Let us carry this spirit of renewal into our work as Rotarians, finding new ways to serve, connect, and inspire change in our communities.

Growth Through Service

In May, nature reminds us that growth happens gradually, but steadily. As Rotarians, our impact may not always be immediate, but through consistent service, compassion, and integrity, we contribute to meaningful change.

Let us nurture the seeds of peace, understanding, and cooperation, knowing that our efforts will bloom in the lives of those we touch.

September 11, 2001 – Lewisporte

In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, the passengers and crew of Delta Flight 15, which was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, established the Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund to express gratitude for the hospitality they received in the town of Lewisporte.

The fund began with an initial pledge of $15,000 collected during their flight back to the United States.

Over the years, the endowment has grown significantly, exceeding $1 million.

As of 2021, the scholarship has been awarded to 341 students from Lewisporte Collegiate High School, supporting their post-secondary education. Click here to read more.

The scholarship fund remains active, continuing to provide financial assistance to local students pursuing higher education. The Columbus Foundation administers the fund, ensuring its ongoing impact on the community. Click here for further information.

Paying it forward –

This initiative stands as a lasting testament to the compassion and generosity demonstrated by the residents of Lewisporte during a challenging time.

Was the brontosaurus real?

Ah, the age-old brontosaurus debate! The short answer is yes… but also no… and then yes again! It’s one of the wildest cases of scientific identity crisis. Here’s the saga:

1. Originally 'Real' (1879): The name Brontosaurus was first coined by paleontologist Othniel Charles Marsh in 1879. He named a new dinosaur species based on fossil bones found in Wyoming. It became one of the most iconic dinosaurs, featured in museums and pop culture.

2. Oops, It’s a Mistake (1903):Fast forward to 1903, and paleontologist Elmer Riggs determined that Brontosaurus was actually the same as another dinosaur, Apatosaurus, which had been discovered earlier. According to scientific naming rules, the first name (Apatosaurus) had priority, so Brontosaurus was declared invalid, effectively making it “not real” for over a century. Museums quietly rebranded their displays, but the public was hooked on the name.

3. Plot Twist – It’s Back! (2015): In 2015, a massive study analyzed differences between the fossils of Apatosaurus and Brontosaurus in more detail. Researchers found enough unique features to resurrect Brontosaurus as its own, distinct genus! So, it turns out that Brontosaurus is real after all!

In summary:

Was it real? Yes, originally.
Did it get 'cancelled'? Yes, in 1903.
Did it make a comeback Absolutely, in 2015!

So, Brontosaurus lives again in scientific legitimacy—and in our hearts.

Here are two videos that you may enjoy regarding this dinosaur question.

Ways to Make an Impact This Month:

Spotlight Youth Achievements – Recognize young leaders in your community. Feature their stories in your newsletter or invite them to share their experiences at a meeting.

Support a Youth-Led Project – Partner with an Interact or Rotaract club to support a local initiative they care about.

Encourage Leadership Growth – Offer guidance and resources to young professionals through mentorship or career panels.

Promote Ethical Leadership – Share the Four-Way Test with students and discuss how it applies to everyday life.

Renewed energy and hope.  By focusing on youth and leadership development, May becomes a time of renewed energy and hope—showing the world that Rotary truly creates opportunities for future generations. 💙💛

Rotary minute

In May, Rotarians worldwide celebrate Youth Service Month, which highlights Rotary’s commitment to empowering young people, developing the next generation of leaders, and fostering youth programs that make a difference.

It’s a time to recognize the impact of initiatives like Rotaract, Interact, RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards), and Rotary Youth Exchange—programs that inspire, mentor, and prepare young people for the future.

Inspiration for Rotarians in May:

🌱 The Future Begins Today
May is the perfect time to plant seeds of encouragement and opportunity for young people. Rotary’s investment in youth isn’t just about programs—it’s about shaping character, instilling confidence, and empowering young leaders to build a better world.

🌟 Mentor, Inspire, Empower
Every young person needs someone to believe in them. Whether through mentoring, scholarships, leadership training, or community projects, your Rotary club can play a pivotal role in shaping bright futures.

💡 A Thought to Share:

A young mind, once inspired, can change the world. Rotary’s greatest legacy is not what we build, but who we inspire.

Food for thought

A Grade 4 student from Cathcart Boulevard Public School in Sarnia has earned a top spot on the global stage. Samragya Suri finished first worldwide in the latest Caribou Math Contest, surpassing 8,273 competitors from across the globe.

The Caribou Math Contest is an international online competition for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, featuring problem-solving challenges that test mathematical reasoning and creativity. Held six times a year, the competition emphasizes puzzle-based questions rather than memorization, encouraging students to apply logic and critical thinking.

In the February contest, students from various age groups and countries tackled complex math problems in an interactive online setting. While all participants receive certificates, top scorers like Samragya earn awards and cash prizes for their performance.

At Cathcart Boulevard Public School, Carilyn Piquette has played a key role in organizing the Caribou Math Contest, ensuring students have the opportunity to take part. Samragya’s success highlights the impact of engaging students in academic challenges beyond the classroom.

His achievement stands as an inspiration for other young learners to pursue mathematical challenges with curiosity and confidence.

This article appeared in the Sarnia Journal. https://www.thesarniajournal.ca/about-us\\

And my comment – If you have never heard of Caribou Math, you should have a look online. It is VERY interesting. It wouldn’t hurt any of you to have a look and see if you can solve their very easiest of problems – and you may even have FUN!

The puzzle is below. Your goal is to find the values of the letters using the symbols placed along the various lines. For example, down the left side, your challenge is to find the values of a and b. You can see that ab – a = aa. Along the top, you can see that ab – a = aa. And down the right side, aa divided by aa = a. (So there are a few easy clues.) Enjoy!
