As the blossoms of May begin to bloom and the world around us wakes from its winter rest, there’s something deeply symbolic about this season of renewal. It’s a time to sow seeds — not just in gardens, but in hearts, minds, and communities.
And perhaps no one embodies this spirit better than our young people.
Across the country and around the world, young people are stepping up with purpose. Whether it’s organizing community clean-ups, creating mental health awareness campaigns, or launching social enterprises with real-world impact, young leaders are reminding us that age is no barrier to making a difference.
Full Name: Liona Maria Carolynne Boyd
Born: July 11, 1949, in London, England
Moved to Canada: As a child—her family immigrated to Toronto when she was 8
Education: Studied classical guitar at the University of Toronto; later studied privately with legendary guitarist Andrés Segovia
🎶 Career & Musical Style
• She blends classical, folk, Latin, and pop influences in her guitar playing.
• Boyd has performed internationally, including for royalty and heads of state.
• She’s released over 25 albums, many of which have gone gold or platinum in Canada.
• Known for collaborations with Roger Whittaker, Eric Clapton, and Chet Atkins, among others.
• She’s a five-time Juno Award winner and recipient of the Order of Canada.
✍️ Writing and Memoirs
Boyd is also an author:
• Her autobiography, In My Own Key: My Life in Love and Music, tells of her artistic
journey, relationships (including one with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau), and personal challenges.
• She later published No Remedy for Love (also the name of one of her albums), which includes reflections on aging, loss, and renewal.
🧠 Health and Resilience
In the early 2000s, Boyd was diagnosed with musician's focal dystonia, a neurological condition affecting hand coordination. Instead of ending her career, she retrained herself and adapted her style, including more singing and songwriting.
❤️ Legacy
Liona Boyd helped bring classical guitar to the forefront in Canadian culture. Her blend of elegance, technical skill, and stage presence inspired generations of musicians.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

The video on Food waste was interesting. I was particularly taken by the solar-powered cooler in a market in Nigeria where the vegetables or other perishable foods can be stored for another day. Such a smart idea.

Great articles on climate. We have to just keep moving forward and keep our eye on the final target.

Like the new website! I didn't realize the actual size of Michelangelo's "David" statue, it's massive!

🌼 In the garden of community, every act of service is a seed of hope.
☀️ May is a reminder that growth takes time — but with Rotary, every small act blossoms into lasting change.
🌷 Like flowers in spring, Rotary ideas bloom when nurtured by fellowship and purpose.
🕊️ This May, let’s renew our commitment to peace, one project, one person, one possibility at a time.
In 2002, Rotary deepened its commitment to peace by launching the Rotary Peace Fellowship program — and with it, a global network of Peace Centers at top universities.
Now, Rotary is preparing to take another bold step.
In 2026, a new Rotary Peace Center will open at Symbiosis International University in Pune, India — the first of its kind on the Indian subcontinent.
Rotary doesn’t just talk about peace — it cultivates it, one Fellow, one region, one future leader at a time.

Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured!
