In Ancient Greece, Socrates had a great reputation for wisdom. One day, someone came to find the great philosopher and said to him:
"Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"
"A moment," replied Socrates. "Before you tell me, I would like to test it with the three sieves."
"The three sieves?"
"Yes," continued Socrates. "Before you speak about others, it's important to take the time to filter what you mean. I call it the test of the three sieves. The first sieve is TRUTH. Have you checked if what you're going to tell me is true?"
"No, I just heard it."
"Very well! So, you don't know if it's true. Let's move on to the second sieve, that of KINDNESS. Is what you want to tell me about my friend something good?"
"Oh, no! On the contrary."
"So," questioned Socrates, "you want to tell me something negative about him, and you're not even sure it's true? Perhaps you can still pass the test of the third sieve, that of UTILITY. Is it useful for me to know what you're going to tell me about this friend?"
"No, not really."
"Therefore," concluded Socrates, "what you were going to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor useful. Why, then, did you want to tell me this?"

Viola Desmond was a Black Canadian businesswoman who challenged racial segregation in Nova Scotia in 1946. What many people may not know is that her act of defiance was sparked by a simple desire to watch a movie.
On November 8, 1946, Desmond was on a business trip when her car broke down in New Glasgow. While waiting for repairs, she decided to watch a movie at the Roseland Theatre. She sat in the main floor section, unaware that it was reserved for white patrons. When she refused to move to the balcony, which was designated for Black people, she was forcibly removed, arrested, and fined.
Desmond's courageous stand against injustice was a catalyst for the civil rights movement in Canada, leading to the eventual abolition of segregation laws in Nova Scotia.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
July 18. Interesting story about the Brooklyn suspension bridge and bridges collapsing across Europe in the mid 19th century due to the cables breaking. The Clifton Suspension bridge across the River Avon in Bristol was designed with chains instead of cables and was completed in 1864 and it is still standing.

Digital Humans. I like the format of your web meetings.
-- Rick Gibson, Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise, District 5020
The Good News You Missed. Many problems in the world but also many positives.
-- Martin Secker, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040
July 23. Really enjoyed the presentation about the trouble spots in the world but also the many things we as a species are doing right. Too bad our 6 o'clock news feeds are so negatively focused.
-- Patrick Gibson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Monday the arrival of 1.2 million doses of vital polio vaccines in Gaza, amid urgent calls for humanitarian pauses to reach hundreds of thousands of at-risk children.
More than 640,000 children are targeted to receive the polio type two (nOPV) vaccines, UNICEF said in a post on X.

Operation Pollination is an inclusive framework that helps you recruit a diverse array of organizational partners willing to engage in the framework’s two goals: pollinator habitat restoration and education projects.
While your Rotary District/Club can be the sole lead on this framework, if you happen to overlap with a National Heritage Area (in the USA), please ask if they have also signed a Pollinator Resolution. If they have, you can resign a joint Pollinator Resolution with your overlapping National Heritage Area.
“Hello, how are your today?”
“I‘m very well, thank you for asking. How are you, and more to the point, WHO are you?”
“Madam, my name is Sanjit, and I’m calling you from Microsoft.”
“Microsoft, is that a city in Pakistan?”
“No Madam, MICROSOFT, the computer company. I’m calling to tell you that we have found a problem with your computer.”
“Really? That’s quite concerning.”
“Yes, Madam. It can become very serious indeed, but thankfully I will be able to fix it for you.”
“No, I meant it’s very concerning because I don’t HAVE a computer.”
“You don’t?”
“No.”
“Ahh, it must be a problem on your laptop, Madam.”
“Don’t have one.”
“Ipad?”
“Nope.”
“Tablet?”
“I have none of those things. As a matter of fact, I don’t even have a telephone.”
After a few seconds of silence, he said “Madam, you are lying to me now!”
I said “Well, you started it!!” and put the phone down.
