Louis Riel: The Métis Leader and Visionary

Louis Riel is a controversial figure in Canadian history, known for leading the Métis resistance movements in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. What many may not know is the depth of his vision for an inclusive and multicultural Canada.

Riel was not only a political leader but also a poet, teacher, and fervent advocate for the rights of the Métis and other marginalized groups. He envisioned a Canada where Indigenous peoples, French Canadians, and English Canadians could coexist and thrive together.

Despite facing immense pressure and eventual execution for treason, Riel's legacy as a champion of minority rights and cultural preservation continues to influence Canadian society and politics.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

July 26. It was a welcome TED talk to hear about The Good news I might have missed. Lower rates of crime in the U.S., extreme poverty dropped to it's lowest rate in history, the rate of deforestation in the Amazon has deceased by 50% and so it went on. Amazing that I seem to have missed all the good news!
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

July 29. Awesome content this week. Loved the "jugglers" on the America's Got Talent show and the musical version of “I'm a ramblin’ man.”
-- Patrick Gibson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Fight for Justice, even if you don’t live to see it. I like the format of the online meeting as you can read much.
-- Rick Gibson, Rotary Club of Strathcona Sunrise, District 5020

July 29. Interesting article on trees!
-- Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

SEPTEMBER IS ROTARY'S LITERACY MONTH

Join BELRAG this September to celebrate the impact Basic Education and Literacy (BEL) projects have worldwide. We invite you to highlight and celebrate your club and district's inspiring and impactful BEL projects.

Twice daily, each day in September, we will host sessions where you can share your BEL projects. These sessions aim to raise awareness about BEL initiatives and inspire others to support or replicate these beneficial projects for children and adults.

Webinar Details:

• Times: 9:00 AM Eastern US Time and 9:00 PM Eastern US Time
• Duration: 30 minutes
• Language: English

If you wish to share a project, please register here. You may sign up to present your project on any available date and time on the registration form. We encourage you to consider presenting in both time slots to reach a wider audience.

Products/Vendors will be considered only IF they have already been working with clubs on BEL projects. No registration will be required to participate in the webinars in September.

Please share this information with other clubs in your district that have impactful BEL projects. You do not need to be a BELRAG member to present, though we encourage all presenters to join (annual dues are $25). You can join here.

An Effective Rotary Club

An effective Rotary club typically focuses on five key areas to achieve its goals and serve its community. These areas are:

1. Club Service: This involves managing and supporting the operations of the club, ensuring it functions efficiently and provides a positive experience for its members. Activities include organizing meetings, events, and projects, as well as fostering fellowship and leadership development among members.

2. Vocational Service: Rotary encourages members to use their professional skills to serve others, promote ethical standards in their professions, and recognize the value of all occupations. This area includes career development programs, vocational training, and mentorship.

3. Community Service: Rotary clubs engage in projects that address the needs of their local communities. This can include initiatives related to health, education, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability. The goal is to make a positive impact and improve the quality of life for community members.

4. International Service: Rotary is an international organization, and clubs participate in projects that have a global reach. This includes efforts to promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, support education, and grow local economies worldwide. International service often involves partnerships with other clubs and organizations.

5. Youth Service (New Generations Service): This area focuses on programs that support the development and leadership of young people. Rotary clubs often sponsor youth programs like Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange, and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), which provide opportunities for young people to develop skills, engage in service, and build leadership abilities.

These five areas collectively help Rotary clubs to fulfill their mission of service above self and contribute positively to their communities and the world.
