Rotarian Vicki
Then on the way home from grocery shopping today, my kids begged for ice cream. Begged. Cried real tears. All the drama.
I said no. I’m short on money, and I might need that $20 before payday. We have plenty of good food at home; we don’t need to stop at the ice cream store.
I heard little sighs from the back seat, and then, “God, we’d really love some ice cream. Is there any way you can give mommy some money so we can get some ice cream tonight? We know you can. Thank you.”
Oh, good grief. “Guys,” I said, “God isn’t going to drop money on our doorstep so you two can get ice cream. He’s BUSY right now with natural disasters.”
“Nope,” Josh said. “God said you’ll have plenty of money for ice cream and to give some to the natural disaster people.”
“Josh…it doesn’t work that way,” I started, and then gave up. And then we got home. And on my doorstep was the mail.
In the mail was an envelope.
In the envelope was a cheque for $123. From an overpayment on a student loan I paid off – in 2007. The kids were not surprised. God was not surprised. They got ice cream. The Red Cross got a donation.
And Mom remembered, yet again, what it means to have the faith of a child.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
October 2. Enjoyed seeing the amazing top 7 natural phenomena. The con man, Frank Abagnale, was funny, but hard to believe he got away with so much for so long!
-- Brenda Race, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Read aloud to your kids. I really liked the Canadiana short. More of those would be great.
-- Todd Colbourne, Rotary Club of Kingston, District 7040
October 3. I loved the Food for Thought, on how to make presentations more interesting by varying the opening remarks. Very interesting!
-- Jim Ferguson, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
October 4. Glad to see a video about ESRAG. I joined about a year ago. It's an area of focus we all need to get involved in if we are going to stop this crisis we are headed for!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
October 4. Road Trip Wrong Turn; wonder how many people have done this? Friendship Exchange; such a great program and will be great when these can resume. Food for Thought; great points and suggestions. Rotary Jukebox; well that wasn’t what I was expecting. Very nice.
-- Andy Adams, Rotary Club of Campbell River, District 5020
October 9. The history of women in Rotary was very enlightening and corrected a few of the errors that I had learnt. The club that I joined in 1993 had a woman as president but I didn't realize at the time how significant that was.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Diane Francis. Each week, I enjoy the variety of messages and forms of communications about Rotary and the inspiration. Thank you to all involved.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

Not a Rotary Conference...
Three women and three men are traveling by train to a conference. At the station, the three men each buy tickets and watch as the three women buy only a single ticket.
”How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?” asks one of the guys. ”Watch and you’ll see,” answers a woman. All of them board the train.
The men take their respective seats, but all three women cram into a restroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, “Ticket, please.” The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.
The men saw this and agreed it was a clever idea. So, after the conference, the men decide to copy the women on the return trip and save some money. When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the women don’t buy a ticket at all.
”How are you going to travel without a ticket?” says one of the perplexed men. ”Watch and you’ll see,” is the answer.
When they board the train the three men cram into a restroom and the three women cram into another one nearby. The train departs.
Shortly afterwards, one of the women leaves her restroom and walks over to the restroom where the men are hiding. She knocks on the door and says in a low voice, “Ticket, please.”
The strength of your Rotary club is you and the association of like-minded people who enjoy each other's company and want to serve their community. Our clubs reflect our diverse communities and welcome all to participate in fellowship and service. Above all, Rotary should be fun and enjoyable for all. We are so close to seeing the end to Polio. There are only a handful of cases of wild polio left, but there is still a need to support our End Polio Now campaign as the last mile will be the hardest.
My wife Donna and I hope that you will join us at the Jasper Park Lodge for the RESPECT conference in April. Check out the website Respect5370.com
Enjoy being a Rotarian and enjoy your Rotary year.

The poll from Food Banks Canada indicates hunger and food insecurity are increasing across the country, with lower-income Canadians hit hardest by inflation.
"It's really hard to hear just how many people in this country are struggling," Food Banks Canada CEO Kirstin Beardsley said in an interview Monday. "We found that nearly one in five Canadians report going hungry over the last two years."
Every week we'll have a draw and the lucky person will see their song featured!
