Inspirational moment
"If nobody else is going to invent a dishwashing machine, I'll do it myself."
- Josephine Cochran
Garis-Cochran Dishwashing Machine was first introduced to the public at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, in a display drawing crowds curious about the contraption capable of thoroughly washing and drying 240 dishes in two minutes.
The crowd-pleasing exhibit was more than a decade in the making. In 1883, Ohio entrepreneur Josephine Garis Cochran grew frustrated with the amount of time it took to clean up after dinner parties, reportedly saying, “If nobody else is going to invent a dishwashing machine, I’ll do it myself.” And she did.
By the end of 1886, Cochran had received a patent for her “dish washing machine” (which also included a system for cleaning flatware). And though many people were impressed by her invention, potential investors made it clear that they would only be on-board if Cochran stepped down and handed over control of the Garis-Cochran Company to men.
Unwilling to do so, it wasn’t until the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair that Cochran had the opportunity she needed to get her dishwasher in front of the right audience. After that, orders for her product began flooding in from restaurants, hotels, hospitals and colleges, and in 1898, Cochran opened her own factory.
Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.
Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?
January 17. I enjoyed today’s speaker, and I did kiss my brain!
Neil Rogers, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
Kiss your brain. Quite a touching message from a practicing brain disease patient and university student on wellbeing. I agree that expressing gratitude daily for even the smallest of life's blessings is very healing. Often the most negative event can bring reasons for thanks.
Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of District 6330 Passport
January 17. Thanks for another informative and fun meeting.
Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370
January 23. A very moving story about the science of gratitude. Very appropriate for our times when we need to be thanking all the health care professionals for taking care of us and what they have had to endure during the past two years.
David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, Rotary has made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We are deeply concerned about the Ukraine crisis and need your help.
As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, Rotary has made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We are deeply concerned about the Ukraine crisis and need your help.
Rotary is made up of people of action, especially in difficult times. In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.
Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
With your donation to our Disaster Response Fund, we can support communities and help rebuild lives during this tragic time.
