Inspirational moment

Jerry Windle, a single gay man, was constantly told by people that he would never be a father. He hardly believed himself that he would ever become a dad, but one day his life changed completely. His parental journey seems like a fairytale come to life, and it’s proof that a merciful heart can win any battle.

Here at Bright Side, we truly believe that parental love can work wonders, and it stands beyond all social prejudices and stereotypes. We’d love for you to dive into the story of a single man with a big heart who raised an Olympic champion who started out as an abandoned orphan.

From Wikipedia

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist, virtuoso and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, simply "O.P." by his friends, and informally in the jazz community as "the King of inside swing". He released over 200 recordings, won seven Grammy Awards, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of history's great jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

December 20. The MRNA and Polio information was very interesting! Weird History looks like a great YouTube channel.
-- Eve Tollenaar, Rotary Club of Grande Prairie Swan City, District 5370

December 20. Another wonderful informative and fun meeting. Love the Moose in the Maple tree and the donkey video. Also, very informative video on the MRNA Vaccines. Thank you and wishing everyone a very happy Holiday season.
-- Nance MacLeod, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

What made you smile today? I really enjoyed this message. Am going to try it all week.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

December 20. Smile – I love it! One of my students once said to me, "Miss, yesterday you smiled at me when I was feeling really down - and your smile changed everything and lifted my spirits!" I decided then and there that a smile is an easy gift I can give, and it makes me feel great, too.
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

December 22. Great history of the Polio Vaccine. I was in the original, first trial of the Salk Vaccine. Then a trial of the Sabin Vaccine given to Salk vaccinated children.
-- Jim Kenyon, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

December 23. Merry Christmas to all! What made you SMILE today!!!!
-- Sharon Blaker, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Walking for Pleasure
...submitted by Kim Dominguez

Several years ago, a friend suggested I join the Walk 1000 miles walking group. At the time, I thought, there’s no way I can walk 1000 miles in a year. Well by July, I had surpassed the 1000-mile mark and I was thoroughly addicted to walking outdoors. I’m very goal oriented so it was only a couple of years later that I thought about completing virtual walks. That is, I would pick a route and track the miles I walked near my home or in the Rockies along this virtual route.

I decided to walk the length of the TransCanada highway from St. John’s Newfoundland to Victoria British Columbia over the course of 2019 and 2020. The total distance was 4,482 miles or 7,212 km!! It was quite fun marking off the different milestones along the way and it was always worth a celebration when I crossed a provincial boundary. By the end of December 2020, I had walked 4,485 miles and was already scheming over my next walking goal.

After a lot of time spent on google earth, I decided to create another two-year goal but this time I would pick a north-south route from Tuktoyaktuk to Cabo San Lucas, which translates to roughly 4646 miles. I decided to give myself a bit of a break and did 400 miles last year on either my bike or cross-country skiing. By the end of 2021, I had made it to Abbotsford, BC and so far, this year, I am well into Washington.

Here are my husband Juan and I at the top of Burgess Pass

SHELTERBOX CANADA

UPDATE AS OF DEC 1, 2021

ShelterBox sent a team in Haiti after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the country on Saturday 14 August.

Buildings were flattened and hospitals already under strain from COVID-19 were overwhelmed.

Days later, Tropical Storm Grace dumped more than a foot of rain over some of the worst affected areas.

The Haitian Government also wants to avoid ‘tent cities’ that previously occurred after the 2010 earthquake. ShelterBox’s emergency shelter kits are intended to help families rebuild their homes sooner so they can avoid overcrowded camps where disease and covid-19 can spread.

We want to help people stay on or as close to their homes sites as possible while rebuilding and recovering from disaster. We want to give people the flexibility to lead their own recovery in a way that works best for them.

All our aid has now been delivered to families who lost their homes following the 14 August earthquake. With our partner Habitat for Humanity, we supported 1,989 families with tarpaulins, tools, blankets, solar lights, sleeping mats, kitchen sets and hygiene kits. That’s around 9,945 people who can begin rebuilding their lives, thanks to our donors' support.
