Calgary Hail Storm – 2020

On Saturday, June 13, 2020, a hailstorm hit Calgary, Alta. It caused $1.2 billion in insured damage. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, this is the fourth costliest natural disaster in the country's history.

"It is clear this is a devastating thing for many people," said Naheed Nenshi, Calgary's mayor.

The hailstorm damaged approximately 70,000 homes and vehicles. It also wiped out entire crops. The hailstones came down large and fast; some reached the size of tennis balls and came crashing down as fast as 100 km/h.

The hailstorm damaged approximately 70,000 homes and vehicles. It also wiped out entire crops. The hailstones came down large and fast; some reached the size of tennis balls and came crashing down as fast as 100 km/h.

Kyle Brittain, a video journalist at The Weather Network, was at the scene. He captured a row of cars that were heavily damaged by hail. The stones also impaled the grass, making tennis ball-sized holes.

"Many people in Calgary have had their homes completely wrecked...a lot of people have had their livelihood taken away, and even those who were fully insured are still looking at huge deductibles, having to come up with thousands of dollars today for an expense that can't be delayed," said Mayor Nenshi to CBC.

Alberta provided financial support for residents who experienced overland flooding. Some residents in the area expressed that the provincial support wasn't enough as their insurance didn't nearly cover the damage from the storm.

Canada's most expensive natural disaster on record is the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, which cost approximately $4 billion. Out of Canada's top 10 most costly disasters, six have been in Alberta.

To learn more about the 2020 Calgary hailstorm, listen to today's episode of "This Day In Weather History."

This Day In Weather History is a daily podcast by The Weather Network that features unique and informative stories from host Chris Mei.

And one of many videos available:

For the curious, according to The Weather Network, other costly Canadian natural disasters of the decade include:

Fort McMurray Wildfire, 2016
Southern Alberta floods, 2013
Toronto flooding, 2013
Slave Lake Fire, 2011
Calgary’s two hailstorms, 2012
Hurricane Dorian (officially most costly storm for Nova Scotia Power in 2019)

Comments from our guests and members

Members and guests attending our weekly meetings are very important to us. Based on your comments we are able to produce many more educational, inspiring, and entertaining weekly meetings.

Following are some of the comments we have received. Would you please send us your comments?

November 28. I have always been fascinated by bird migrations, how something so small, particularly in the case of a hummingbird, can fly such long distances to nest and then return to its wintering habitat. The video on the whimbrels stopping on Deveaux Bank in South Carolina on their way from Brazil to the Arctic is no less an undertaking.

December 4. It is good to be reminded of how grateful we should be to Tommy Douglas, that he recognized the need for Universal Health Care, and Judy LaMarsh for shepherding the Medicare bill through Parliament.
-- David Werrett, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

November 29. Hate: I was not looking forward to watching this Ted talk because I anticipated it would be very depressing. But this woman’s message about becoming enlightened and our ability to change our attitude, especially our thoughts, toward other people gave me hope. It also caused me to look inside myself and gave me some work to do!
-- Vicki Horsfield, E-Club of Canada One, District 5370

Sally Kohn – What Can We Do about the Culture of Hate? I most enjoyed the humour because of these days of COVID we all need a good laugh! The program "What Can We Do About Hate?" was very thought provoking: pointing out that we are all guilty, but because we shape our culture, we can also change it. We especially need to change the way we talk to each other.
-- Elizabeth Rhoads, Rotary Club of Wilmington, Delaware, District 7630

December 6. America’s First Museum Dedicated to Slavery. I really enjoyed the Christmas music.
-- Lynne Ternosky, Rotary Club of D6330 Passport

Humour

Bigfoot is sometimes confused with Sasquatch, Yeti never complains.

What did the pirate say when he turned 80? Aye Matey!

Why didn’t the ghost eat his candy? He didn’t have the stomach for it.

How much does a rainbow weigh? Not much, they're pretty light.

Why are fingers so reliable? You can always count on them.

What sound does a cow make when it runs out of milk? None. There is udder silence.

My uncle has two Dobermans called Rolex and Timex. They are watch dogs.

What's the leading cause of dry skin? Towels.

Why was 69 afraid of 70? Because they once had a fight and 71.

Always make sure to knock on your fridge door before opening. There is a chance there might be a salad dressing.

Manual of Procedure

The Manual of Procedure offers a concise version of Rotary’s policies and procedures. The manual is geared to Rotary club and district leaders and features information that’s most relevant to their roles. It is published every three years to reflect adopted legislation and decisions of the RI conventions, the Council on Legislation, the Rotary International Board of Directors, and the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation.

The manual covers these key areas:

Structure: Includes policies and procedures for clubs, districts, zones, Rotary International, and The Rotary Foundation.

Carrying out Rotary's mission: Includes the structure, policies, and procedures of the programs of RI and the Foundation

International Meetings: Includes the RI Convention, Council on Legislation, and International Assembly

• Rotary's constitutional and legal documents

Rotary’s constitutional documents

The Rotary International constitutional documents provide club and districts the foundation for RI’s policies and procedures.

• Constitution of Rotary International

• Bylaws of Rotary International

• Standard Rotary Club Constitution (All clubs admitted to Rotary membership must adopt this constitution.)

• Recommended Rotary Club Bylaws

Clubs can tailor these bylaws, as long as their changes align with Rotary’s constitutional documents and the Rotary Code of Policies. If you have doubts about your proposed changes, please submit them to the general secretary for the RI Board to consider.

For more information on these documents, click here.
